By Frustrated_me Go To PostQui Gon discovered the Sith were back and knew that he had to break the rules of the Jedi so as to bring balance to the force. Before any of the Jedi council even listened Qui Gon was sure that Maul represented the return of the Sith. He was a respected Jedi master, a student of Count Dooku and a teacher to Obi-Won.
Qui Gon was an unconventional Jedi, he was willing to break rules to achieve what was needed at the time.
He was the one that thought the other Jedi's how to be one with the force, showing how to ghost appear and pass on his teachings.
Qui Gon discovering Anakin was also a key moment of the storyline, he knew the risks associated in teaching the ways of the Jedi to Anakin but took those risks anyways - other Jedi wouldn't have.
Qui Gon also has a lot of backstory explained in Star Wars Clone Wars the animated series, he's truly a great character IMO.
These are all things that he either does or we are told. In The Phantom Menace, we learn literally nothing about his character. Not once do we get anything on the level of Rey’s time spent alone on Jakku or in the cave on Ahch-To, or Kylo smashing his helmet in the lift.
You telling me things Qui Gon does isn’t telling me anything about who he is as a character. And why the fuck do I need to know backstory?
Do I know anything about the backstory of any of the 12 jurors in 12 Angry Men? No. But their characterisation shone through the writing and the acting, and that is what makes that film so gripping - seeing personalities clash against each other, not the ultimate ending of how the court case ends up.
Backstory is fucking poison. Canon is poison. Cinema and fiction should always prioritise character over everything else, because in the end that is what gets you invested and makes you care. I’m already groaning at reading the words ‘fan service’ in regards to Solo.
Fans are entitled prissy fuckers who want instant gratification and filling in of blanks in Wikipedia articles so they can remain in their stasis bubbles rather than anything actually life changing.
Think of all the people spaffing their pants over the ending of Infinity War safe in the knowledge none of it actually matters. If it did, they’d be fuming.
It's a good thing Flabber has a new found love of ice skating. He'd take a look at the last few posts and probably vomit convulsely.

i wouldn't blame him.
By Shanks D Zoro Go To PostThe whole scene when the girl saved Finn was a truly poor deus ex moment. It made no sense how she could have actually saved him. It was just unrealistic.
That wasn’t deus ex. Her saving him is signposted from the start of the fuckin movie, let alone that scene where her reactions and Johnson’s choices in editing make it very apparent what is about to happen.
Is Infinity War still a good movie if you didnt watch any of the films? Im thinking it wouldnt be, considering a lot of the emotional moments hit you more because you know the backstories of the characters.
I like it, but it's truly the Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children of superhero movies.

I don't even like Rogue One so you can't come at me from that angle. That one is truly shit. It's basically Star Wars porn that you only watch for the cumshots, and even those feel limp dicked and unearned.
Don't give a shite how earnest and cynicism free TLJ is. You know a great earnest, cynicism free blockbuster from the past few years? Pacific Rim, which a lot of people already compared to Star Wars for that reason. That doesn't make it a great movie either, even as someone who would marry Del Toro and bear all of his fat children.
ANH and ESB are expertly plotted, balanced and edited films. They capture the imagination with its characters and locations without waste or repetition, which is pretty much all that TLJ does: Finn's subplot is tokenistic garbage, using other minority character dumb sacrifices for growth, relegated to minority appropriate subplots, with a shit, unexciting and poorly developed climax and final confrontation with another non-character (Fazma). Played more for banal sentimentality and cheap laughs than genuine emotion and growth. Dern's character is a poor stand in for what should have been Leia, who they didn't want to kill because they didn't have the balls to go all in and pretty much admit they rendered all of the original trilogy characters worthless and trapped in the limited Star Wars universe cycle they are only milking for nostalgia's sake.
ANH and ESB on the other hand are inventive, surprising, shocking, and cover a full range of emotions and drama. They contain iconic moments and performances that stood the test of time and elevated sci fi cinema to new heights. No one is going to give a shit about Benicio Del Toro's character or purpose, no one is gonna remember Rose's token sacrifice other than how dumb and forced it is. No one is gonna appreciate Poe's growth when it comes at the expense of so many contrived and idiotic obscurity for obscurity's sake moments. No one is gonna praise their hamfisted attempts at capturing audiences with the stupid ring and broom kid scenes, and whole casino/animal abuse garbage subplot that goes nowhere, trying and failing to introduce a gradient to a pretty basic universe based on pretty basic morality.
The only thing TLJ manages to do is not fuck with Rey and Kylo Ren and manages to develop them an inch, only hinting and what might be if they actually had the guts to break free from the light side/dark side stupidness. They are undoubtedly the best part of the new movies, even if they can't properly show Rey struggling or failing because they don't have the balls to actually put her through some hardships and experience loss. If a follow up movie manages to do something interesting with it, it will no doubt be back-attributed to this film for no acceptable reason.
Like I said, I can see it as a necessary movie, because this universe is limited and has been milked dry of every single interesting thing. But it's not a good movie.

For someone who can't be seen liking any of the Marvel movies, precluding them from ever exceeding some idiotic artificial barrier of quality due to some insecurities and hilariously elevated sense of taste and connoisseurism, trying to -at the same time- pass TLJ as something as incredible and groundbreaking as Mad Max is absolutely hilarious. If there was ever a 6/10 movie, it's TLJ.

I like Iron Man 3. It’s a character-centric movie. I like The Avengers. It’s a character-centric movie.
It’s certainly not an elevated sense of taste fam, I’ll sit and watch umpteen episodes of RuPaul or Step Brothers for the four thousandth time in a row.
The MCU is just shit because it prioritises loose ends and *things happening* over exploring its characters beyond what their wikipedia biographies say they are to be.
TLJ is nowhere near as good as Mad Max. It’s just the best blockbuster since.
I can't be bothered to read all of these posts but I will reply to Shanks whose favourite is Rogue One: I think it's the worst Star Wars film. An absolute bore.
The Last Jedi would have been genuinely good if it wasn't for the Codebreaker arc. As bad as Rogue One is as a whole, that is the worst 30 minutes of Star Wars (films) yet. Including the prequel trilogy. What a fucking mess.

The state of blockbusters is dire, I'll give ya that.
I saw Jumanji the other day and fuck me, I wanted to die. How did that movie do so well?
I think Star Trek Beyond is a good and rewatchable movie in recent times, but yeah, there is really nothing that stands out for years. Even the Apes movies, which do something interesting and are generally pretty even in quality feel tedious to watch for some reason.
Alright n8 you lovable goof, enjoy your Star Wars. I don't think I'll ever get it.

TLJ rules because of what it does on a metatextual level with Star Wars. it dismantles the dull setups of TFA and is essentially an autocritique of the series' established mythos, while distilling what star wars is about at its core. It felt like the only Disney blockbuster that actually took a chance to do something different, so it figures it got mouthbreathers angry.

How did Liverpool pick up the Allez Allez Allez chant? I think I remember Atletico chanting it some 2-3 years ago, Madrid too, as well other clubs obviously but how did Liverpool become the ambassador to this specific chant?

“The Son” follows a once-gifted 15-year-old and promising wrestler, whose life spirals out of control when his cop father commits suicide. He winds up in prison, nurtured by an uninterrupted supply of heroin from a seedy chaplain on the inside. When he learns long-hidden truths about his father’s unexpected death, he makes a brilliant escape and begins hunting down the people responsible for his wrongful sentence.
