This kind of elitism disgusts me and his no place in this, The Sacred PC Hardware Thread of Egalitarianism.
Yeah, I'm super sensitive to computer noises. Of any kind. I think most people would consider the noise SC2's fans make at 60-70% perfectly acceptable, but I can't fucks with it. /Hitch
To better illustrate my obsession with silence, I'm thinking of getting rid of my otherwise excellent Tannoy studio monitors because of the very, very slight white noise they make when nothing gets played through them. I already sent them back for RMA once, having deemed the baseline hissing unacceptable, only to find out it's apparently a core feature of these monitors, which most reviewers seemingly forgot to mention.
I've been living with it for the better part of two years, but not a day goes by that I don't silently () curse them.

By Smokey Go To PostCan't say I've had any noise issues with my EVGA UX 2080Ti? Maybe they changed the fan design slightly or something.
They added their logo to the fan blades because that somehow makes them quieter.
Didn't you get the thicc boy Ultra card btw?
I'm sitting here working and have a Twitch stream playing, yet the only things I hear is my damn fridge motor running (not the ice maker/that is disconnected and turned off) and the occasional clicking/thunking of my hdd and it drives me up a damn wall.

What's generally better for sticking heatsinks onto memory / VRM, sticky thermal pads or heatsink plaster?
Seems like pads would be easier to remove and clean.
So. The audible fan noise in my case, I thought it was coming from my case fans. But no. It's actually coming from my PSU. My fans are damn near silent, but I assumed the slight hum was those fans. It's the 1300w holdover PSU.
Looks like a trip to Microcenter will be in the works! Needed a smaller, more efficient PSU anyway.

I’ve not looked into it enough, but the thermal glue included is generally considered a bad idea since it makes returning the card to it’s stock configuration a pain.

Getting Windows 10 Home x64 bit for my sister's new build (yews, it will be ready next week!). Trying to decide if I should get OEM vs. Full Retail version.
Full version (Retail):My sister's machine won't be overclocked off the bat... but I bought the parts specifically for future overclocking in a year or two. That kinda leans me towards paying the extra $40 for the full version. Suggestions?
- Includes transfer rights to another computer.
- Doesn't require a previous qualifying version of Windows.
- Expensive
OEM :
OEM versions of Windows are identical to Full License Retail versions except for the following:
- OEM versions do not offer any free Microsoft direct support from Microsoft support personnel
- OEM licenses are tied to the very first computer you install and activate it on
- OEM versions allow all hardware upgrades except for an upgrade to a different model motherboard
- OEM versions cannot be used to directly upgrade from an older Windows operating system
What happens if I change my motherboard?
As it pertains to the OEM license this will invalidate the Windows 10 upgrade license because it will no longer have a previous base qualifying license which is required for the free upgrade. You will then have to purchase a full retail Windows 10 license. If the base qualifying license (Windows 7 or Windows 8.1) was a full retail version, then yes, you can transfer it.
From the Windows 10 end user license agreement:
b. Stand-alone software. If you acquired the software as stand-alone software (and also if you upgraded from software you acquired as stand-alone software), you may transfer the software to another device that belongs to you. You may also transfer the software to a device owned by someone else if (i) you are the first licensed user of the software and (ii) the new user agrees to the terms of this agreement. You may use the backup copy we allow you to make or the media that the software came on to transfer the software. Every time you transfer the software to a new device, you must remove the software from the prior device. You may not transfer the software to share licenses between devices.
If you want transfer rights and be able to make all sorts of hardware modifications, then the retail full license is recommended.

I don't think it's a decision you'll regret. It's something you should be able to re-use in the future going forward with your next card upgrade. Just make sure you get one of those adapters to plug the fans into the GPU instead of the motherboard.

Officially cancelled my 9900k preorder. Playing Blops 4 last night and I'm pulling ~90fps @ 4k max settings. Other games have been playable at great framerates too with the 2080ti, and at 4k, my processor isn't nearly as constrained as it would be at 1080p. The 6c/12t are holding up really well at 4k, so I'm good for now. I'm much more interested in modern motherboard features and QOL enhancements than I am the processor. I still may get it down the line. I love the look of the Maximus XI Formula, but there's no rush for me to switch platforms at launch, especially as everything I'm playing is providing a super high end experience at 4k with zero issues.
So I have this 250GB nvme drive I'm gonna keep on standby (can't use it on X79). Next up on my list is probably a new, quiet, and more efficient PSU, and possibly a case.

Smokey, put your nvme drive into an adapter like this: https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-PEX4M2E1-M-2-Adapter-Profile/dp/B01FU9JS94
NVMe uses the pcie x4 lanes, anyway, so this should work nearly as well.

i looked into it yesterday. with x79 it involves downloading a certain bios and potentially modifying it since the platform doesn't support nvme as a boot drive and i really don't want to potentially brick my rig.

Speaking of BIOSes, I need to update my Z270 board to see if it solves the "wait 5 minutes to load into Windows" problem I've been having. Still not sure what's causing it. One of the older Windows 10 updates fixed it, but it came back after one of the recent ones. I restart like twice a month, so it's not really that big of an issue, it's just annoying and unbecoming.
Could be a connected USB devices initialization problem, but I'm too lazy to go unplugging them one by one. Might be something else entirely tho.

Wait for Zen 3 😏
By Adam Go To PostWait for Zen 3 😏Zen 3 is probably a long way off, but waiting for Zen 2 or Cannon Lake (which should actually bring IPC improvements) is not a bad idea.

By diehard Go To PostIf they can get consistent boosts to 4.5 on 8 cores.. and a 10-15% IPC improvement? That's a killer value if their prices don't raise.Between that and the clock speed increase, that would be about a 25% performance upgrade. Possibly more if they are able to address the cross-chip latency (can't remember the term, but it is specific to Zen architecture so far when threads on opposite halves of the die have to talk to each other).
By diehard Go To PostIf they can get consistent boosts to 4.5 on 8 cores.. and a 10-15% IPC improvement? That's a killer value if their prices don't raise. You’re a lot more optimistic than me. I’m predicting a similar improvement going from 2000 series to 3000 series that we saw going from 1000 to 2000.
It’s partly why I said fuck it and opted for the 9900K instead of waiting to upgrade from my R5 1600 to a 3700X. I don’t see AMD matching the clock speed or IPC of Intel until at least the 4000 series, and by then Intel could have made their own advances.
I’m also predicting that AMD will add more cores to their consumer grade CPUs to stay ahead of Intel in multi-threaded performance. They kinda have to at this point to remain competitive.

AMD is going to have a 8-10 months (total guess here) of advantage in their (TSMC's) process node over Intel. If there's any time that they are going to catch up to Intel in lightly threaded workloads in the foreseeable future, Zen 2 is the time it's going to have to happen.

I genuinely hope you’re right. I’d love nothing more than to see Intel hit with some competition in the raw performance department and not just competition in price/performance ratios. It’d bring about a pricing war and we’d all benefit from that, not to mention just straight up better products.

Could always blag Microsoft for an official key for free like I did. Haven't paid for Windows since 2009.
SpeedFan is actually pretty fucking great, once you figure it out. I think it was conflicting with Asus' Q-FAN BIOS settings, so I turned that off. I can live with all fans running at 100% until I get into Windows and SpeedFan takes over. I left the Q-FAN profile enabled for the CPU fan for now, running at a steady & virtually silent 800rpm, since it's been working out well for me. I don't really care about CPU temps and upping the case's fans speed when gaming (dependent on GPU temps) will help better cool the CPU as well.
I've also upgraded my BIOS, which unfortunately didn't solve the waiting 6 minutes to boot issue, so I'll have to check if it's USB related or what.
