What’s everybody’s take on that Intel commissioned benchmark by Principle Tech?
It’s sketchy as shit, they compared the 9900K to the 2700X with the latter running as a quad core, but I feel like there’s some major overreaction to it.
Firstly, why the hell would anybody in the right mind take the figures from it at face value given that it’s a commissioned benchmark? None of the bullshit should’ve come as a surprise to anybody.
That’s a whole lot of SSDs. I thought I was doing well here with a single terabyte m.2 drive.

By Smokey Go To PostAs I'm still going back and forth with what platform I'm going with, I have my storage setup pretty much finalized.
-1x NVME Samsung 970 Evo 250GB Boot/Programs (just ordered)
-1x 1TB Samsung 860 Evo SSD (Steam/Origin)
-1x ITB Samsung 860 Evo SSD (Uplay/Battlenet/Other clients)
-1x 750GB Samsung 840 Evo SSD (Other stuff)
May increase the size of the 860s, SSDs are getting really cheap in price. But definitely plan to have 4 drives. This mechanical gotta go. It's 2018.

Super sketchy. Tech Jesus did a good breakdown today. He seemed absolutely flabbergasted at Intel's gall.
I don't even have an M.2 drive. :(
I feel so plebe. :3

he showed up at their door and they actually talked to him looool
on a side note, yall should see what kind of bullshit enterprises get away with and the claims they make about hardware, it's mind boggling. I have to deal with it all the time too :(. Literally have to fight with people because of what some in marketing department says.

I have a vision Vapes.
By Laboured Go To PostIs it better to have 2 x 1TB SSDs or 1 x 2TB SSD?
Probably 1x 2TB? But I have it in my head how I want things as far as installs and stuff. Been wanting to do it how I mentioned for a while actually. I didn't know SSD prices dropped that far.
Here's the SSD I'm still using (as my boot/program) since 2011

What a time. Pretty sure I paid like $350 or something for that back then.

I got the 2TB Samsung 850 EVO MZ-75E2T0B/EU which is my video games drive. Fast traveling in games like Witcher 3 in 3 seconds is p cool.

Probably the the 2TB, pretty sure the larger the drive the more read/writes they have in them. There’s not a huge selection of 2TB SSDs though, I believe.

Get with it Dr Blade.
By Zabojnik Go To PostAny decent SpeedFan alternatives out there? Not that I remember when I was looking a couple months ago.
By Smokey Go To Postlordt, I want Optane.tbf, it's really fucking cool
Is there a practical reason? Not really m but that's ok ;_;

Put your boot, programs, and maybe the most used game or two on it. Though, it probably won't help game load times as much as the other stuff.
Or, since you are getting an Intel motherboard, just install Intel RST and have it act as a caching drive so that your most used files are copied to and loaded from it.
e: or was it SRT? I don't remember: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/architecture-and-technology/smart-response-technology.html

Looks like I'll be going with the Asus Z390 ITX board, I'm hearing it's packing a 10 phase VRM. Madness.
By Adam Go To PostIf you don't get the MEG Godlike, Vapes…
Sadly, the go-faster dragon on that board does nothing for me.
By Smokey Go To PostGet with it Dr Blade.
I'm not about that life... yet.
By Smokey Go To Postthink i'm hopping off the 9900k train boiswhy?
By Kibner Go To Postwhy?
the motherboards i want are 450 - 600 fuking dollars. that's hedt pricing, but not hedt. cpu is 500+ and then add another few hundred for ddr4 and i might as well go hedt.
my rampage which is the top board for the hedt chipsets from asus, was 500 back in 2014.
i feel weird paying all that and not continuing on the hedt track tbh.

You just want a 12c/24t monster chip to demolish all our Time Spy benchmarks

By diehard Go To Posttbf Smokey is looking at boards that are absolutely overkillYou say that but I know Smokey would be down for running LN2 cooling 24/7 for a 6.8Ghz overclock
By diehard Go To Posttbf Smokey is looking at boards that are absolutely overkill
this is true. but ive been on an overkill board for 4 years now. and it's great. no issues, and has handled up to 3 gpus with no problems.
i like overkill.
By Kibner Go To PostNot that I remember when I was looking a couple months ago.The lack of quality fan control software is kind of shocking. I need to check again, but I don't think even Asus' AI Suite (which includes fan control) works with my Z270F mobo. Don't see it listed under utilities on Asus' site. Or any other utility of the sort. All they have is fucking Aura.
After a week of (admittedly limited) use I must say I'm kind of disappointed by the cooling on the EVGA 1080ti SC2. The factory fan curve, which tops at 70%, makes the card considerably louder than my MSI 1080. Temps are good at around 75°C, but it's definitely not something I want to listen to when playing without headphones. Lowering the fans to 50% improves things significantly, but also causes thermal throttling (from ~1920mhz to ~1880mhz at the default 84°C limit). I almost regret not going with the 50€ cheaper blower style card, which I could've upgraded with a custom cooler for considerably better noise / cooling performance. Might still do it, but first I need to see if increasing the case' airflow makes a difference.
By Adam Go To PostIs that not getting 2080 Ti regret I hear?2x the price for a 30% performance jump? Por favor.

Rip the shroud and and fans off and strap some Noctua’s on it
By HottestVapes Go To PostRip the shroud and and fans off and strap some Noctua’s on itOr perhaps ...
I’ve gotta second EVGA’s fans being loud as hell though. My SC2 1080 was the same and the difference between that and my Gigabyte 2080Ti’s fans are worlds apart. Even on 100% speed, they’re quieter than the EVGA’s at 75%.
By HottestVapes Go To PostRip the shroud and and fans off and strap some Noctua’s on itA guy on [H]ard did just that and regretted it. The 1300rpm Noctuas just don't cut it. EVGA's fans go up to 3000rpm.
Arctic Xtreme III or Morpheus II with static pressure optimized fans is the way, if I decide to go down that path.

There's also some 100mm Thermalright fans that'd do the trick (TY-100) but they're a tad harder to source. I know a guy that sells them but he's only got red in stock at the moment.

The cooler on the SC2 just doesn't seem to be hefty enough. Really liking the noise / performance on the Morpheus II with those Vardars. ~70°C at 1000rpm would be sensational. Does up the price by quite a bit compared to an all-in-one solution like the Arctic Xtreme III tho.

Should've probably gone with a blower card, but at least I got another 2 years of warranty on this EVGA. Might come in handy when reselling.
Which Z390 mobo did you end up with?
Can't say I've had any noise issues with my EVGA UX 2080Ti? Maybe they changed the fan design slightly or something.
By Smokey Go To PostCan't say I've had any noise issues with my EVGA UX 2080Ti? Maybe they changed the fan design slightly or something.tbh, you may not have the same sensitivity to fan/motor/pump noise that Zabo does.
Even for me, I don't like liquid cooling because the noise the pumps make are more annoying than fan noise to me.

Really Kibner. Now you're just too Hollywood! You literally can't hear anything from the pump unless you have a defective pump or head up to case.

I'm replacing my fridge for a similar reason.
Be thankful you have the equivalent of 60 hz ears instead of Zabo and mine's 240 hz ears. It's cheaper in both time and money.
