Think my scaling nonsense has fucked everything up
Firefox keeps rescaling itself so everything is tiny, and steam crashes every time I quit or tab out of Dota
Might just give up on the 4k altogether and set everything to run at 1080p
The OS looks so clean though :(

Well, I am dumb as shit.
My Optane drive does work with my mobo, even though it isn't listed as supported. I just had to plug the power into the doodad hanging off the data cable adapter.

Really considering going for a really strong gaming laptop, and then getting a new 11 series GPU for my desktop, vs a full blown desktop rebuild. Now that you can get 144hz screens, gsync, mechanical keyboards, full blown GPUs etc in a laptop, it's intriguing af.

RIP my Rival 310. Fucking bullshit rubber grip has started to come off the right side of it and the glue residue is seeping out the sides, covering my hand and also, kinda conveniently collecting all the dust off my mouse mat.

And a picture of the power port I just ignored off-hand thinking it was for if I was using a different kind of data connection:
Fucking hell, turns out having something 3D printed by a not-friend / commercial entity is not cheap at all.
Seems things are slowly getting better.
Although this guy makes the same mistakes a lot of people do when talking about HDR i.e. It's all about "pop" saturation. It's about giving a higher range of colors to work with for creators, and also being able to better retain highlights in dark/shadowy areas. Take a game like COD WWII which isn't a bright game at all, but the HDR is implemented really well in that case.
I can confirm that the Fuzedrive tiered storage solution does work pretty well. Biggest downside is that everything is first stored on slow storage. As files are read, they are moved to the fast storage tier. I am not sure how the software determines what files to replace or if to replace them once the fast storage is full.
After spending just a fraction of a day with an Optane drive, let me just say lol holy shit it's fast. This is in comparison to the 840 Evo over SATA that I was using.

high-end gaming laptops have better cooling in place than macbooks, they're thicc
Couldn't hold out, bought a G403 while they're so cheap. Steelseries need fucking for their bullshit.

Well, I spent a couple hours overclocking my ram this morning. The fastest I could get was 3066 MHz with 'ok' timings. Still much faster than the base 1800 MHz if I didn't oc it.

By diehard Go To PostYou got DDR-1886 modules (PC4-14900) to an effective 3066 MHz?No, they are rated for 3600 (PC4 28800) but Ryzen is super finicky with overclocking ram and I don't feel like fucking with it anymore than I have to. The XMP profiles were unstable so I went down the list of suggested speeds and timings my motherboard had and picked the fastest stable one.

So what are you thoughts on the Ryzen platform after having your system back up and running for a while now? Any noticeable differences with Intel?
By Smokey Go To PostSo what are you thoughts on the Ryzen platform after having your system back up and running for a while now? Any noticeable differences with Intel?Other than the aforementioned memory overclocking issue, it's been great. The CPU overclocks pretty well on stock cooling, haven't noticed any issues with resuming from sleep (sometimes a problem with my old Intel platform), CPU is fast enough for my 1070 to be the bottleneck in games.
Pretty happy, so far.
e: it was also a pleasant surprise for it to be compatible with Intel Optane drives, despite my initial derpiness. from all accounts, the Store MI software (a limited, licensed version of FuzeDrive and free for certain amd chipsets) is more useful than Intel RST
I wonder what the performance differences will be. I will probably stick with my 1070 until I can't run games at the settings I want at 60+ fps.
I might be on team 1160 on desktop

Fams, I'm blessed right now.
Went down to my local Asda (Walmart for everybody stateside), and they had a small electronics and smartphone toolkit for 5 Elizabeths. It had the exact bit I need to take the rounded screws out of my Dark Pro RAM so I can shove them back in my case now and close the side panel.
Was on the fence over the IFixIt tool kit that was £50ish, so that's 45 quid saved and going towards a new mouse.
Cancelled my order on the G403, I'm thinking of either going for that new G305 wireless mouse or the Ultralight Phantom.
My Rival 310 right now has seen better days. Don't think I'll ever buy another Steelseries with their shit build quality. Had to tape over the side where the rubber grip was because the glue residue would not come off, no matter how much alcohol I poured over it and scrubbed.

I've taken a liking to my Kinesis Vektor mouse. I can tell the sensor isn't quite as good as the one in my Zowie EC2-A, but it's close enough and I'm not at a skill level where that difference in sensor quality would matter. The sensor is still good enough that I can make large, fast movements without weird spinning or other things.
It just fits my hand and grip better than the EC2-A; I don't apply too much pressure on my pinkie finger anymore.
It remains to be seen if the rubber grip on either side of the mouse start to peel in this heat and humidity, but it has been a couple months already and no evidence of that. Much better than the Razor Mamba I had years ago.

I'm not super picking when it comes to the sensors tbh, I just want something that's well-balanced and fairly light. Those two mice I mentioned tick those boxes for me, well one of them is extremely light, but still.
The 310 is pretty comfy, well was, but the balance of the mouse always felt off. The weight is noticeable on the right-hand side.
Found a neat piece of software to help calculate memory timings and voltages and stuff on Ryzen: https://www.overclock.net/forum/13-amd-general/1640919-ryzen-dram-calculator-1-1-0-beta-2-overclocking-dram-am4.html

Kinda slept on you Kib, sorry. Have a fair amount of experience playing about with RAM on my R51600, and know a little bit about the fuckery when it comes to RAM and Ryzen. A few questions
Are you running four sticks at once? And what motherboard are you using and how upto date is the BIOS?

I'm using the MSI X470 Gaming M7 AC motherboard. It has the most up to date BIOS. I reset to default settings after updating it to make sure nothing was weird. Last BIOS update was in May.

Same issue prior to picking up the extra two sticks, yeah?
Have you tried changing the timings to an even number, I.e. 16-16-16-XX? Ther was/is some funk with Ryzen and odd numbered timings.

I can fully understand your 2700X’s IMC being a dick towards running 4 sticks at 3600mhz, can see it happening with two sticks too, even with B dies.
There’s been some reports that despite the allegedly better memory support on the 2000 series, the IMCs on the new CPUs aren’t any better than previous gen and can in fact be worse.
Not posting at 3200mhz or 3466mhz though seems completely off. I can hit 3200mhz with tighter timings on an R5 1600 with B dies (although I only have two slots on my ITX board, so that helps).
My hunch is it’s either the motherboard and/or current BIOS. Despite being upto date it could be worse than a past BIOS. Or it’s one stick of your RAM, from the original two you bought first at fault.
Before you go taking things out and putting them back in, check the voltage is definitely set to 1.35/1.4 for the RAM. If it’s at 1.35 try bumping it up to 1.4.

Damn. Back to my previous two hunches then. Btw, drop me a link for that software. I don’t tend to stress test my RAM directly, usually just run through the usual (Cinebench, OCCT, Realbench, variety of games) and of doesn’t crash I’m happy to call it “stable”. Weirdly, the CB graphics benchmark usually crashes if my RAM isn’t stable before anything else does.

A good thing about that software is that, by default, it immediately stops when it finds an error. And will even beep at you. I should probably let it run for an hour or longer (like recommended in the FAQ), but I usually just let it go for 15 minutes. Typically gets me to ~300% coverage.
Doing some googling for you. This could help, but you might’ve tried it already
Most Ryzen boards by default set DRAM timing to 1T, and the reason is it cycles at 1T command rate and the infinity fabric supported by Ryzen loves to be synchronized. The faster the memory the better Ryzen will perform. If you have the ability to adjust your command rate then set it to 2T. This is slightly slower but may improve overclocking. You may try adjusting SOC voltage a little to improve IMC...
