I have gigabit internet and it’s taking me 5 hours to download CSCould be your ISP, could be where you are downloading from, could be your router's max speed, could be your wireless protocol and signal strength (if connected via wireless), could be the computer's ethernet port max speed, could be the hard drive you are saving the file to has a slower write speed or is busy doing other stuff at the same time.
Nah it was just steam being ass, took like 10 minutes but it started downloading at 32MB/s instead of 3.2MB/s

Cool guy's never look at
I ordered that Acer XB271HU. I looked up several reviews and it seems that it and a similar Asus are as good of gsync gaming monitors as you can get right now. The Asus has a little better build quality, on average, and a better UI, but not $200 better.
All the HDR monitors I looked at have terrible local dimming, don't have a large enough brightness contrast, super expensive, or some combination there of. Looks like this monitor will have to last me until that technology and/or OLED matures and becomes affordable.
It was nice working with you for the last ten years, DoubleSight 263-N. I trust you will perform admirably as a secondary video monitor in the monitor array.

That the 1440p 144hz Acer monitor? I've got the 1080p version of it. It's good, you'll know doubt be happy with it, though early on I had an issue with a single bright green stuck pixel. Apparently Acer aren't too hot in that regard, but I sorted it out and it's been great ever since.

For $550 with no taxes or shipping? Done.

What a monitor lads. I never knew the gsync life until i got it
By Laboured Go To PostAwwww yay, I didn't actually think that link would be helpful. Good for you Kib.It was a good deal and I've been wanting a gsync monitor for a while. May as well get one of the best for a couple hundred off while waiting for the next gen stuff to get its shit together.
So, thanks!
By Zabojnik Go To PostBuying a 16:9 monitor in 2018 tho. I'll allow it, but I expect better from you, Kib.This one was just a stop-gap. Super-wide is one of my must-haves on the next monitor, along with quality HDR and OLED.
By Laboured Go To PostIs OLED ever going to cut it for a desktop monitor with burn in issues for static elements?I'd just set the taskbar to hide. I alt-tab enough, otherwise, for it to not be a worry. Manufacturers are also coming up with ways to even the aging of the OLED pixels so it's not as much a problem: https://www.cnet.com/news/oled-screen-burn-in-what-you-need-to-know/
Linked in that article is an RTings experiment where they put some OLED TVs through a more realistic scenario than their torture test: https://www.rtings.com/tv/learn/real-life-oled-burn-in-test

Manufacturers are also coming up with ways to even the aging of the OLED pixels so it's not as much a problem: https://www.cnet.com/news/oled-screen-burn-in-what-you-need-to-know/This all sounds well and good in theory, but there's no way you wouldn't get burn-in or at least noticable IR in normal desktop use on a monitor based on current OLED tech. You probably could get around it, if you were being extra careful, but I don't want to think about burn-in when I'm behind a monitor and I don't to change my habits for the sake of it. Besides, if it wasn't a real worry, LG would be all over that market.

I don't see OLED maturing to the point where an OLED monitor is feasable in the next couple of years, by which time microLED will be around, hopefully. That truly sounds like the panacea for all monitors ills, if they can get it to market somewhere around 2020.
I expect it to take at least that long for HDR content and display tech to mature and for prices of the monitor I want to become reasonable.

Yay, UPS'es are installed. They have a little bit of electrical noise, but I'm hoping it will go away or I will learn to tune it out eventually.
Ugggh, this soft chirp every 2-4 seconds is fucking annoying. I might have to call APC and figure out what is causing it because this shit is untenable. Might wait a couple days to see if it goes away on its own, though.

Ok.... basically I effed up my machine to the point I need a new mobo (CMOS fail errors and I may have statically damaged the board), but I'm not ready to do my future build. So I need to get a mobo with similar specs to the Biostar TZ77B ATX LGA1155 Motherboard, or that one exactly (need one that can handle an Intel i3-3220 3.3GHz Dual-Core Processor).
Problem is finding a 4+ year old mobo new, may have to get it used. I've been told to get away from BioStar and get an AsRock!, ASUS, or MSI one with similar specs. I need a machine to last me 6-8 months so I can finish my future machine:
Form Factor: ATX
CPU Socket: LGA1155
Chipset: Intel Z77
Memory Slots: 4 x 240-pin DIMM (will import the current memory)
Memory Type: DDR3-1066 / 1333 / 1600 / 1866 / 2133 / 2400 / 2600 (will import the current memory)
Maximum Supported Memory: (DOES NOT MATTER)
RAID Support: Yes
Onboard Video: Depends on CPU (Must have one in case my 550Ti fails)
CrossFire Support: (DOES NOT MATTER)
SLI Support: (DOES NOT MATTER)
SATA 3 Gb/s: 4
SATA 6 Gb/s: 2
Onboard Ethernet: 1 x 10/100/1000 Mbps
Onboard USB 3.0 Header(s): Yes
Onboard Audio: must use Realtek ALC892 or better
Similar MOBOs
ASRock Z77 Pro3 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard (compared to the Biostar TZ77B)
ASRock Z77 Pro4-M LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
ASRock Z77 Extreme4-M LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
ASUS P8Z77-M PRO LGA 1155 (Hear very good things about this one)
MSI Z77A-GD65
any advice?

Did some more research and it looks like this particular UPS Model (BR1500MS) has batches where that squeak happens and won't ever go away. Both my units are from the problematic batches. I will have to RMA it or something via APC or Amazon to get a new unit without the squeaking issue, because holy shit.

By The Frankman Go To Postany advice? The one good thing about Intel providing all chipsets for the CPU's is you cant really go out and buy a totally garbage motherboard like you could 20 years ago. Anything that is Z77 should provide you with an adequate board to hold you over until you can get an entire new build.
The only thing you listed that might not meet the criteria (as long as its an ATX board) is maybe the onboard sound, all the other things are provided by the chipset. Also.. H77, Q75, Q77, and Z75 will all work.
Thankfully, you can always get a quality external soundcard (or DAC) for $100 which will also work well for your rebuild.
Yay, APC has great customer service, so far. Started a chat session, no wait time, got a response in like 10 seconds. They are creating an RMA and will replace my unit for free. Will receive notification of it within one day.
Looking at other people who had this similar issue, APC will also send me the replacement before requiring me to send back the original. So, that is pretty cool.

I'm torn because I've had to drop $200 in what I thought were repairs.

Actually, recently I'm starting to think that I might keep this old machine even after I do my new future build as a "Basic User" machine. So that means I can't go out and get a completely crap mobo.

Yes their gaming benchmarks are very different than other sites, Ian (super smart dude) says it was all legit and ran with all the latest versions of everything but they are looking into it more.
It's overall exactly what i expected it to be but i was hoping for better overclocking. Just ordered an 8700k and Z370-F , thought id try Asus for once.

My Predator XB1 came in. I let it warm up while fiddling with all the settings (especially g-sync!) and learning how everything works/what all the settings mean. Then calibrated it and now I'm good to go!

The high refresh is great, I'm still not sold on the value of gsync though. Owned my monitor for almost a year at this point too, shit just doesn't wow me.
