I’m largely agreeing with this. Which is why I don’t think the “gap” means much for larger elections! These swings are like 50 point turn arounds.
Good thread about Mueller putting pressure on Manafort. Assumes the same thing LFK asked regarding a Manafort pardon.
meanwhile china just began building an entire offshore naval base next to one pakistan's most important ports immediately after reassuring many that they'd never build a base in pakistan. an almost direct response to our stance on pakistan's aid and support going forward in addition to the recent border issues between india and china.

The White House has given Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin the green light to quash an internal rebellion among conservative foes of his leadership, he told POLITICO late Tuesday.

If she wants to be a leader and not a vizier, she needs to act like it. If she wants to give hope to POC, particularly POC women, she needs to stop hiding.

I am kinda surprised but not really that the "paid protester" accusation strategy is nothing new:
According to comments in that thread, it goes back centuries. Probably even longer, as long as there is an "other" that needs to be suppressed.

At 10 a.m. next Wednesday, church leaders expect up to 600 people for a blessing ceremony, and many of those people are expected to be armed with AR-15s, the gun used in recent mass shootings across the country.
"This will be a big thing for us. It's a new stage for us because it incorporates the rod of iron, as it is in Revelations. Revelations talks about the returning Christ ruling with the rod of iron."
Tim Elder sat down with Newswatch 16 to explain the beliefs of the church, led by the Reverend Sean Moon.
Moon is the son of the late Sun Myung Moon, who founded the controversial Unification Church that drew national attention in the 1970s and '80s. The Rod of Iron Ministries is an offshoot of that religious organization focusing on what it believes is the right of families to defend themselves with assault weapons.
"This rod of iron is the AR-15, in today's terms."
The Moon family also owns Kahr Arms, a gunmaker that moved to Pike County a couple years ago. Newswatch 16 was at the opening ceremony at that time in Blooming Grove Township.

Jesus has an AR-15 in the Bible, guys. Look it up.

He hates guns, hates supply side economics, loves the environment, is a Jesuit that appreciates and understands science, and is also rather liberal (for religious standards) on social issues. Half of the American Catholics ignore what he says let alone protestants.

One possible red flag in her account, which may have been cause for suspension, is the fact that she retweeted a video implying that the school shooting victims in Parkland, Florida may have been actors.
By Randolph Freelander Go To PostI'm sure the sealed charges further vindicate Dear Leader.
People are making assumptions of course. Manafort's wife as an example. Mueller went after the wives of people to get more compliance in the ENRON case. It was reported that Gates was reaching a plea, so if these new charges affect gates it could mean he's pleading to the new charges being filed and not the charges currently on the table.

I remember being really surprised the first time I heard this from a pastor. It was like, ‘didn’t we all do the Reformation in grade 11 history class?’

Catholics have some extra books in their bible. Hardcore born again types that believe the only passage to heaven is through belief in Christ also take issue. I believe Catholics officially take the stance that good deeds matter.
In my past life where I was much more religious, a christian pastor told a class of mine that the largest obstacle for christian missionary work is that Christians themselves can't agree on their doctrine. Which is why we see so many splintering denominations.
Neither Catholics nor Protestants consider Mormons Christians.
I think they're all fucking nuts.

Yes, Catholics do believe that acts are necessary to go to heaven. Belief in God doesn't mean much if you don't live in a Godly manner.
Now, as to what a Godly manner means, there is debate. Which is why Pope Francis has many Catholic detractors.

Belief in God doesn't mean much if you don't live in a Godly manner. Many religious denominations take the position that just the belief in God and Christ themselves is enough to absolve them of any of their sins. There's many many things that are wrong with the Catholic Church, but they really do take it seriously when they mean that you actually have to act in a behavior that's consistent with their faith to get into heaven -- although there's degrees to what is and isn't forgivable.
Now, as to what a Godly manner means, there is debate. Which is why Pope Francis has many Catholic detractors.
The hypocrisy of how they covered up the completely disgusting misdeeds of their own clergy is a whole another story though.

Basically. From a Protestants perspective this actually teaches people away from Christ. Hence the belief Catholics aren’t Christian. The history of the Church has little to do with the belief.
"The belief in Christ" being more important than your deeds as a person is totally on brand for some of these denominations though.
I worked in humanitarian aid for the Catholic church for eight years. They're aware of who they are. They're an enterprise first and foremost and money is valued above all.

By reilo Go To PostYea, the opulence that drives the Catholic Church is something to behold. It disgusts me, frankly. I hated the new church going up when the one that was built like 80 years ago was still big enough and good enough to serve the congregation. I don't need to be seeing ornate decorative work, precious materials, or anything like that. The building needs to be safe and comfortable enough to focus on the mass and with good enough acoustics that everyone who can hear, can hear clearly.
The way it was first put to me wasn’t even about doctrinal distinctions, he literally said “there are Catholics and there are Christians. We’re Christians.” He was from a Presbyterian church, and I know nobody in that group could tell me what Presbyterianism actually involved, because I tried to have a discussion about it and the difference with Methodism. These people weren’t stupid at all either, it was just what they were taught.
That’s beyond depressing. Not that it hasn’t been happening throughout history, but for the life of me I still don’t understand how religious institutions end up this way.

On the other end of the political spectrum, actor Paul F. Tompkins appears to have been suspended overnight for telling Marco Rubio to eat ten D-sized batteries, while others who have told Rubio to go fuck himself over his inaction on gun control.

I'm sad that it's teens that are going to care the most about gun issues because they essentially have to by virtue of school schootings being a thing that they don't want to endure. But it's kind of how this society runs. We want better for it but the people who inevitably have to fight for decency are the ones with feet planted on their necks while the rest of us just shrug.

Breh my jaw dropped when I visited the Vatican. St. Peter’s basilica is fucking wild. The amount of marble the Church took from the Coliseum to build St Peters is insane. There’s local contingents of Roman Italians that still hold negearivity towards the Church because of this.

On the other hand, I kind of get my back up when I see people shit-talking Christians like they’re the avatars of historical/political evil. Because the ones I knew growing up were volunteering their weekends at soup kitchens, doing things like spending the night sleeping on the street with homeless kids so they could know what it was like, helping adults learn to read, etc. etc. TBH I saw them do way more on-the-ground good for free than all the internet social justice types I know put together. I’ve seen way more hypocrisy out of that crowd.
Well edgelord internet atheists forget that religion is more a means of power and control than the root of any particular evil. Creating institutions in which people can consolidate power and create the rules for others isn't limited to religion. If anything in abstract it's kind of amazing how much power the Pope had independently of the Princes of Europe.

Enh, it’s not just a power thing though. I think too many postmodern quasi-Foucauldian hot takes over the years have made people lose sight of the fact that religious institutions function as sites of pro-social meaning generation in cultures, and that humans don’t function well without that stuff. There’s a reason humans have put spiritual thought at the apex of existence throughout most of history. The idea that a religious worldview is something you can choose to opt out of is still a pretty new one. Even the word ‘religion’ as we think of it, as a separate mode of being is fairly recent in most cultures.
By reilo Go To PostYea, the opulence that drives the Catholic Church is something to behold. When the CEO of the agency I was at retired in 2011, Obama appointed him Ambassador to the Vatican (position currently held by Newt Gingrich's wife).
I worked in HR and a little over a year later once this guy had relocated to his state issued Roman villa, I was instructed to coordinate the removal and shipping of dozens and dozens of boxes and paintings that were being stored behind locked cages on our mezzanine level. All this artwork he had collected over his 30+ years working overseas (mostly in Eastern Africa) was being stored and now shipped to Rome. I thought the agency owned everything being stored down there, but apparently a ton of it was all personal. Some of the shit we were pulling out was incredible.
Anyway, his successor had zero overseas or humanitarian aid experience. None. It was shocking to the staff that the board would appoint someone with no ties or firsthand knowledge of the people that we serve. But then it made sense. She was previously the Dean at Notre Dame's Mendoza School of Business. They were bringing her on to guide the money ship back into the harbor.
