By Hitch Go To PostWhat percentage of people in the US would you say can reasonably be expected to decline to vote?Vast numbers of the population aren't even registered to vote, much less in a position to decline doing so.
In England there are plenty of polling stations and you can vote by post, but I guess the former can be an issue in the US given the size of the country
In former Democrat Congressman Joe Crowley's district, only 3% (read: THREE PERCENT) of the eligible voting population was registered to vote. That's who was electing him. Three percent of the population.
That's the only reason why corporatist, establishment Democrats ever really "win" anything.
So you see, the problem with America is, you don't even need voter suppression to screw the people over. That's the completely disadvantaged position everyone is in, here. We can't even get to the voter suppression part before screwing ourselves over.
By Hitch Go To PostThat is pathetic, franklyThey don't even stress the importance of education in school.
Do they even try to stress the importance of voting in school?
They have it ridiculed down to the difference of whether you'll be the manager at the grocery store or the one asking "paper or plastic?"
Public schools in America are nothing more than nationalized daycare centers.
By Hitch Go To PostThat is pathetic, franklyWell it's extra pathetic because it's also wrong. It was 13% of registered democrats voted, and it was a primary. I have no idea where he got the 3% number from.

aaaaannd more bullshit
It's really not bullshit though. From teaching watered down history to completely ignoring things like finance, state/local politics, even basic critical thinking exercises.
Our schools are trash as fuck lol
Half of an effort given at all would mean that graduating seniors register to vote as part of the process. But we don't do that because we either don't care or explicitly don't want to.

diehard, you're talking about 13% of registered democrats. I'm talking about 3% of entire eligible voting population.
Also, I'm sorry I got emotional and flew off the handle at Hitch's following question about schools. I can attest that I was fortunate enough to grow up in good communities and I was served quite well in my education by their schools. Any grievances I may have with systematic inefficiencies are of my own concern and I was wrong to generalize so grossly.

None of the four high schools that I went to even took you through the process of registering for any business license, trademarking any business name, or otherwise engaging in society as anything other than an employee to be used as labor for the ruling class.
Did I learn my Calculus though? Yeah, it helps sometimes.

Teach kids how to do that at the very least lol

My senior class went to the zoo and some old Salem themed town. Could've seen a town hall or got some shadowing events going. Maybe offer a class on financing or understanding investments.
Nope? Nearly a dozen different versions of gym class instead? Yeah that sounds like daycare to me.

By Smoke Dogg Go To Postdiehard, you're talking about 13% of registered democrats. I'm talking about 3% of entire eligible voting population. There was 259,877 registered democrats in 2018 with a population of 712,053. You must be thinking of New York's 5th district where 4% of active voters voted in the Primary.
man where hell did yall go to public school? I started learning finances in the 8th grade.

Ok, then to answer Hitch's original question, 96% of the voter base declined to vote.
Ninety-six percent, goddamn.
Thank you for the hugely important correction, diehard, and for answering Hitch's question better and more accurately than I could.
By diehard Go To Postman where hell did yall go to public school? I started learning finances in the 8th grade. After doing the Calculus in my head again, I only went to three high schools, actually: High Point in Beltsville, MD, and then Albany and Schenectady in Upstate NY. They were really good schools. Schenectady High School actually offered CCNA (Cisco) training. I took that training, passed the certification test, and it set me up for life with my first summer internship. But those were affluent areas or used to be affluent areas at one point or another. I do not think that the vast majority of American high schools are afforded the same opportunities or possibilities.
By Smoke Dogg Go To PostOk, then to answer Hitch's original question, 96% of the voter base declined to vote.Well of course the registered Republicans (that number includes them) won't vote in the Democratic Primary and the incumbent got 82% of the votes. Most people just want "their side" elected, they don't care about the Primaries.
Ninety-six percent, goddamn.
Thank you for the hugely important correction, diehard, and for answering Hitch's question better and more accurately than I could.
I went to elementary and middle school in the US, was even in a "magnet/IB" program. It was still pretty bad in terms of what was being taught.
I went to highschool in a 3rd world country and it was pretty far ahead of what I experienced(top 5 school in the country though).
The US had far more after school/extra lesson programs though, for free too, which is pretty great. Compared to 0 free extra lessons in my highschool.
You gotta have parents highly invested in the child's education regardless. Can't depend soley on public school.

By Smoke Dogg Go To PostOk, so then even less than 4% of the voting population was electing Joe Crowley to the ten (read: TEN) terms he'd been elected to. That's the sordid picture of American politics. No, much higher than that. I'm guessing nearly half of eligible voters turned out for the 2016 election in that district. I could do the math, and i do love getting wrapped up in the pedantics here, but... meh
Why do you keep downplaying the importance of Primaries though? That's where it all has to get started at. That's where the majority of reform government is ever going to have a chance of happening at. It sure isn't going to be happening on the national stage with the likes of Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz carrying water for Donald Trump and the Republicans. You guys didn't win the election, you guys won a conspiracy. Russians weren't the only ones involved in your collusion. I'll believe that to my dying day.

Gym, however, was absolutely mandatory.
There was only one quarter that I didn't have straight A's. I got a B because of one class. That class was gym. I don't even know how da fuq you get a B in gym. Might as well start handing out grades for lunch and study hall too.
lol at the idea of schools teaching financial literacy in the US, if yours did that's exceptional as hell
Also most schools will teach history with no real critical eye or an actual focus on the plight of the marginalized. Or how much capitalism has essentially molded the country. Not even slavery gets the seriousness and gravity it should really. Think about how the europeans settling and moving west essentially genociding the NA too, putting out money for the scalps of Native Americans as if they were beaver pelts. People hunted down, exploited for labor. Redlining areas so minorities could only develop in certain parts of a town/camp, then just burning it down when the white people want to expand. Even trying to boot people back to their country of origin after they've done the arduous task of building say a railroad, and they got picked up in the first place by the companies because the white europeans had started to organize and demande basic shit.
Even just the idea that political and social progress only starts and ends with voting is a shitty discussion. How do you get voting rights when you don't have them. Activism and political change goes well beyond what people do in voting booths. You can stress the importance of voting but political change and progress doesn't hinge on it. What it really hinges on is a politically aware and active group of people tired of some shit, organizing and demanding better. Which keep in mind, the much younger millennials are starting to do because the political inactivity and complacency of us and our elders has led to them being shot up in school, with many of them, as "minors" unable to vote. It's not all that surprising though, one of the more politically active generations, the boomers were being sent to Nam before they could even cast a ballot and that was impacting their every day life. Friends leaving and never returning. You could go die for your country at 18 but couldn't even vote yet (it was 21 before 1971).

Speaking of history, I remember an ex that was raised conservative flip a shit when they changed SE 39th to Cesar Chavez. The miseducation of history is quite real.
How we discuss labor in general, not even counting the history of how people legit died for piss breaks, 8 hours and better safety standards, never ceases to depress me. It's a very classist thing. Short form, middle class and upper middle class love to shit on themselves and lower.

No other Red State is as electorally detrimental as them. How easy would it be to make the people of Texas demand a referendum?
