So R rep Chris Collins was arrested by the FBI this morning for insider trading. Couple of points :
Besides the point that this has the potential to get more people involved, it also has implications for
Nov.
We got a shot at picking up this r+11 district now

I posted this on the last page. It's pretty fucking atrocious.

It's terrifying, but long term I think it's a hurdle we should attempt to jump. Voting needs to be as easy as possible for everyone. There's gotta be some ways to secure such a thing????????
Should start with it being everyone's right they get at 18 with no need to register for it like we go currently (you just get it along with an ID) and no bullshit like it being revoked. Fuck gov issued IDs being shit you pay for too. The first couple should absolutely be free.

I mean I definitely agree with this, which is why I said long term. Waiting lines, pole closures, people who can't easily drive etc etc would all benefit from having an online system. Fuck ... even lazy kids might vote if it meant just whipping out their phone.
It's just still so much easier to commit voter fraud with electronic voting than physically voting (via polling place or by mail).
It can't be a state-by-state or county-by-county solution, that's for sure. It would need to be a federally regulated system and built by the minds from the NSA lol.
Android apps aren't secure, iOS apps aren't secure, websites aren't secure, anything touching the Internet isn't secure.
Can you imagine a benign virus that goes around whose only purpose is to do invisible redirects such that it takes the info you enter to confirm it is you but then changes who you vote for to be whatever the virus writer wants?

I can lol.
Which is why vote-by-mail works simply because of the logistics of defrauding at that scale to influence an election is difficult.

Sure ... and this is an area in which I'm woefully ignorant so I'm hoping you can elucidate for me some here. What types of security is available? How is it deficient? Is there something better in the pipeline?
By Fenderputty Go To PostSure … and this is an area in which I'm woefully ignorant so I'm hoping you can elucidate for me some here. What types of security is available? How is it deficient? Is there something better in the pipeline?I honestly can't think of any method I would trust because it all involves the Internet and there are a billion ways to change the bits that are sent over it.
And electronic voting is just so susceptible to mass/repeated attacks. Such that even the tiniest possible flaw can result in millions (or billions, if someone really wanted to make a point) of fraudulent votes.
Don't forget targetted ddos attacks preventing people in certain locations from even being able to attempt to vote!
Ooh, that actually made me think of attacking an electronic vote in a different way. Instead of casting fraudulent votes, just deny the votes from even being cast while making the user think nothing went wrong.
It could be voter suppression done on an unprecedented scale while also being near impossible to detect if done smartly.

All it takes is the device casting the vote, any device processing the vote, or any network any of those devices are on to be compromised.
The user device and user network being the most likely and easiest to target.

Ummm...
Estonia has electronic voting. They make it work. They live right next door to Russia.
You could probably figure out how to combine some blockchain technology with it for added verification and security. IBM would probably love the government contracts to make that happen on a local scale, starting with big cities like Los Angeles.
It could definitely work. I don't buy that just because it's on the Internet that automatically make it insecure. You just figure out how to add multiple layers of security, starting with something as minor as two-step authentication and all that jazz.
Instead of mailing your ballot in, they mail out a confirmation to everyone as to how their vote was recorded, etc.

At this point it doesn't matter much since bad actors at any point of the venture can and do fuck things up. The very investigation we have going of the administration pretty much epitomizes this.
Technology can, must, and needs to be leveraged to expand the electorate for a fairer and more perfect democracy.

As someone who writes code for Wells Fargo and reads what other people wrote and deals with various other internal applications and all their "quirks" (idiotic mindfuck decisions), I can believe this.
Now, if you don't mind, we'll get to writing your online voting system.

It’s been over a year since Ajit Pai and the Federal Communications Commission claimed that the agency’s comment filing system was subjected to a cyberattack during the height of last year’s net neutrality debate. But after waves of speculation from both the public and Congress, the commission has finally come clean. According to a report published by the agency’s inspector general yesterday, there was no distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, and this relaying of false information to Congress prompted a deeper investigation into whether senior officials at the FCC had broken the law.
And that evidence never came. “We learned very quickly there was no analysis supporting the conclusion” that it was a DDoS attack, the report said. That’s when the focus of the OIG investigation pivoted from the alleged cyberattack to the FCC officials and how they may have broken the law by providing false information to Congress. It wasn’t until December that the Justice Department was sought to handle the case. After reviewing the information provided by the OIG, the law enforcement body decided not to prosecute. The DOJ was asked for comment but did not respond by press time. The FCC is really run by some fucking assholes, isn't it?
South Asians like myself need to get together and find out what can be done about the likes of Ajit Pai and Dinesh D'Souza and Nikki Haley and any other Republican South Asian like that one guy who was/is a White House spokesperson.
I feel very ashamed. I hope I never have to run into the aforementioned in the streets cuz I just might be losing my security clearance on that day.

What percentage of people in the US would you say can reasonably be expected to decline to vote?
In England there are plenty of polling stations and you can vote by post, but I guess the former can be an issue in the US given the size of the country
