Degrees is right. The easier thing to do is just omit shit during history class and pretend things didn't happen or just use different vernacular. Japan for instance will pretend like certain historical genocides just didn't happen.
Then you get passages like this in recent American history textbooks, "The Atlantic Slave Trade between the 1500s and 1800s brought millions of workers from Africa to the southern United States to work on agricultural plantations.”
"brought" "workers" "work on..." It's right there in the fucking name "SLAVE TRADE" and yet the passage is so whitewashed to avoid the fact that people were chained the fuck up, ill, barely fed and dying on boats in order to be forced labor.

From what I recall the process by which the British Empire was established was basically ignored when I was at school.
We knew it happened, but not how.
I remember thinking Zulu was a pretty good film when I watched it like 15 years ago, wonder how badly it stands up to any kind of scrutiny in terms of the way it presents our colonialism and the cultures we were invading and destroying.
Quite the dissonance between the way when you're taught about Nazism the phrase 'those who ignore the mistakes of history are doomed to repeat them' is constantly bought up, all the while the syllabus pussyfoots around the shit that your own country has done.

I remember being taught about the slave trade but it was disproportionately focussed on dysentery and slavers stuffing bungs of rope up slave arseholes so they could sell them without the buyer knowing and asking for a discount.
I mean that's classic British ethos. Fuck these guys but also fuck those guys too.
Crusades were painted as the occasional trips to the middle East to pick up new things like carpets and forks.

I don’t know if I’ve seen slavery deniers, but I’ve definitely seen people downplay the severity and brutal nature of slavery plenty. “They had garaunteed food and shelter for life”
Well that's how it starts, the downplaying. Holocaust denial pretty much started with "the numbers are inflated."
By Fenderputty Go To PostI don’t know if I’ve seen slavery deniers, but I’ve definitely seen people downplay the severity and brutal nature of slavery plenty. “They had garaunteed food and shelter for life”This is definitely a fairly pronounced sentiment amongst multiple generation white southern families in the south.
Coming from the north it was a bit shocking but I can't tell you how many times I came across some version of "listen, I get slavery was wrong and all that but more often than not it wasn't THAT bad... Just look at how many slaves wanted to stick around/how well X treated them etc."
Even lots of the history in the south around the trade is pretty whitewashed. Like every plantation tour I ever got dragged to does talk about the slaves but every one to a man basically emphasizes the gentle plantation owner stereotypes and focuses primarily on the glamour of the wealth and life of the slaveowners and their hardships.
Trump was shown explicit evidence that Putin himself ordered the hit, and he still did what he did. Lmao

Trump has made a mockery of the United States, and I thank him for that.
Because of him, I'm no longer embarrassed of Pakistan, just disappointed.

By Hitch Go To PostWas thinking about holocaust denial earlier, and realised that it's the only historical tragedy I can think of where a sizable number of people plain deny that it happened at all (maybe the Armenian genocide, but I'm not sure if people deny that it happened or if they deny the scale of it)Most people in America like to fudge over the horrors of slavery and the genocide of Native Americans.
Is there such thing as African-American slavery-deniers, or people who don't think that the war against native Americans actually happened?
Or South African apartheid, the killing fields, Stalin's forced famine in Ukraine etc

While it's harder to deny than other things one of my favorites is "blacks owned slaves too"

They used to get us to watch schindler's list in history class after talking about the holocaust. At least when I was in school.
Shit works too, young kids are much more likely to pay attention to something if it's a hollywood movie.

Gotta love how that graphic gets lighter and lighter towards the end, finishing with light text when it comes to white people ending slavery
By DY_nasty Go To Postthe only real american atrocities universally acknowledged are pearl harbor and 9/11 imhoI haven’t heard anyone talk about Pearl Harbor in years
By RobNBanks Go To PostI haven’t heard anyone talk about Pearl Harbor in yearsits not common conversation of course, but you're not gonna find people that say "pearl harbor never happened" or ""achualllllly those are all fake videos much like what was used during the moon landing"
Fox just sort of quietly drops these tweets without much from their TV people, but yo this is fox. It’s still shocking
On that note, I now have a headache
Barack Obama just reminded us what we’ve lost - What Obama’s first big post-presidency speech got right — and wrong — about the backlash to liberalism
"People just make stuff up!"
Like, I know I could do this with ANY Obama speech but listening to him the other day is a painful reminder how far the gap is and just how broken this country politically is.

Fuck Republicans and that 13% of Democrats.
"Among religious groups, white evangelical Protestants are unique in the extent to which they feel demographic change will represent a negative development for the U.S. More than half (52%) of white evangelical Protestants say a majority of the U.S. population being nonwhite will be a negative development, while fewer than four in ten white mainline Protestants (39%), Catholics (32%), and religiously unaffiliated Americans (23%) say the same"
FUCK ALL Y'ALL
"There is a sharp divide in views of Trump by religious affiliation. More than three-quarters (77%) of white evangelical Protestants express a favorable opinion of Trump. White mainline Protestants (50% favorable vs. 49% unfavorable) and white Catholics (50% favorable vs. 50% unfavorable) are narrowly divided, while few religiously unaffiliated Americans (28%) and nonwhite Protestants (17%) view Trump positively."
SERIOUSLY, EAT SHIT
"Notably, white evangelical Protestants are uniquely likely to say that media bias against certain candidates is a problem with the current election system. About eight in ten (79%) white evangelical Protestants say media bias against certain candidates is a major problem, while an 15% say it is a minor problem. Only five percent of white evangelical Protestants say this is not a problem."

i guess..... gillibrand is cool? :/
I still like Harris. She’s signed on to all the key issues and has the prosecutorial background to stop the week on crime attacks.

that's a L incoming
By Kibner Go To PostBiden is the equivalent of side-character comic relief. No way should he be a major candidate.
we post trump now
anybody could be a candidate
biden and bernie are just too old for me though
thing I like about Biden is he can definitely trade blows with Trump on some Goku Jiren shit and he's passionate as fuck, and should have Pennsylvania locked up which is big time
at least you get a guy who'll go down with holes in his chest and an empty clip, that's an L you can live with
some of the people on that least gonna turtle up something serious once Trump gets going
how many xanax will booker have to pop before a debate with trump?

if you want a likeable centrist, he's your guy. blank check biden is giving everyone smoke in year one too
i don't fuck with booker tbh. i like him eventually just.... not yet.

Gonna be interesting watching the dems flop and infight over the lead up to the next election. Once again I'll be listening for the acknowledgement of the poor that never comes. Even as we have ever growing homelessness and jobloss. All about the "middle class" here we go...
Yea. I'm not aboard this Biden train, at all. He needs to sit his ass down somewhere.
Isn't Booker part of the reason that Jersey is so fucked? Am I just thinking of the other guy?
Sanders might have some explaining to do. Even if he didn't know, having your chief strategist be plugged in with Manafort is a horrible look.

In 1981, the average age of a Representative was 49 and the average of a Senator was 53. Today, the average age of a Representative is 57 and the average of a Senator is 61.
I looked into it before and it's like something like 3/4 or greater of both the house and the senate are 55+. It's ridiculous.
Biden can consistently out roast Trump and can lock up rust belt states. He's got the best chance to win out of the current names by a good bit.

TBH ... we might need some charisma to win. Another reason I like Harris. She's smart as a whip and can bring it since she's a prosecutor.
One notable name missing from that list is Avenatti. I hope to god he doesn't run but it sure looks like he's setting up to do so.
By Kibner Go To Postof course you need charisma to win; that's as important as appearing competentI think 2016 disproved that part at least lol
