By Smokey Go To PostEverything is going open world. That requires more CPU power. You have more of everything. Now we're moving towards 4k or fauxK which puts more of a burden on CPU and the GPU. These CPUs weren't good at launch and aren't good now. Just because you see the GRAPHICAL fidelity of some of these titles, doesn't negate the CPU aspect. Unity was too much for consoles. There's a reason Syndicate doesn't look as good not are the crowd sizes anywhere near what Unity was doing. The game had it's technical issues, but again, on PC it's one of the best looking out when it has decent CPUs to work with, and that was a launch game. They are mobile chips. The system(s) aren't balanced at all.
Also 60fps has become way more of a thing. That requires a good CPU. That's on top of maintaining the graphical fidelity people expect.
FFS
Less than a quarter of a CPU that released in 2012
Don't let the graphical and technical wizardry of a studio like Naughty Dog fool you. These CPUs are definitely holding software back.
I agree they are CPU contrained but I'm not sure why you cant see my point about sony knowing this and offering work arounds for majority of games and there is still MORE juice to be had from these machine. The day AI is doing something worth while of note in games is the day I care about serious single thread performance over multi-threaded performance. Could more be done with better CPU's, sure, but you could ALWAYS have better until you reach the point of just sticking i9's in machines.
Who gives a fuck if there are 100,000 NPC characters who do absolutely nothing, give me more particle effects, better animation and lighting over that any day.
60fps is more of a thing but we will follow the same cycle we do everytime when the new gen comes, Fidelity > Performance. I really dont think we will be getting 4k games 60fps in the ps5 era.

We'll likely see bastardised Ryzen laptop CPUs in the next gen consoles, better than what they currently have but still weak in comparisons to what will be standard hardware for Desktops PCs in 202X.
Frankly, it doesn't matter how good console specs are anyway. Most developers will target 30FPS regardless because it's a lot easy to sell a good looking game than it is to sell a good performing/controlling game.
