One Piece (Japanese: ワンピース Hepburn: Wan Pīsu) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. It has been serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine since July 22, 1997, with the chapters collected into 86 tankōbon volumes to date. The story follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a boy whose body gained the properties of rubber after unintentionally eating a Devil Fruit. With his crew of pirates, named the Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy explores the Grand Line in search of the world's ultimate treasure known as "One Piece" in order to become the next Pirate King.

The manga has been adapted into an original video animation (OVA) produced by Production I.G in 1998, and an anime series produced by Toei Animation, which began broadcasting in Japan in 1999. Additionally, Toei has developed thirteen animated feature films, one OVA and eleven television specials. Several companies have developed various types of merchandising such as a trading card game and numerous video games. The manga series was licensed for an English language release in North America and the United Kingdom by Viz Media and in Australia by Madman Entertainment. The anime series was licensed by 4Kids Entertainment for an English-language release in North America in 2004, before the license was dropped and subsequently acquired by Funimation in 2007.

One Piece has received praise for its storytelling, world building, art, characterization, and humor. Several volumes of the manga have broken publishing records, including the highest initial print run of any book in Japan. The official website for Eiichiro Oda's One Piece manga announced that the manga has set a Guinness World Record for "the most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author". As of October 2017, the manga has sold over 430 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling manga series in history.

Wealth. Fame. Power.
One man had acquired all these otherworldly things: The Pirate King, Gold Roger.
His final words drove countless souls to the seas.
“My treasure? If you want it, you can have it! Go find it! I left it all there!”
Men everywhere head toward the Grand Line to chase their dreams.
The world has unquestionably entered the Great Age of Pirates!

One piece follows the adventures of the young pirate protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy. Luffy dreams of becoming the Pirate King and being in possession of One Piece, the most famous treasure left behind by the former Pirate King, Gold Roger. He hopes of accomplishing this goal and enjoying his adventures with about 10 crewmates.

The One Piece world is made up of 4 seas, East Blue, West Blue, North Blue, and South Blue. The Grand Line is the ocean current that is surrounded by the Calm Belts. Just like the 4 seas, it also is host to its own islands. The Grand LIne follows an imaginary line that runs from north-west to south-east across the middle of the world and perpendicular to the Red Line. The Red Line is a vast continent that circles the globe from north-east to south-west. The Calm Belt is filled with dangerous fish called Sea Kings, which makes it difficult to enter the Grand Line from any of the 4 seas.

The world is balanced by three powers. Two of which are made up of pirates. The other power is the World Government. They enforce law, provide international security and military operations through the Marines, their military sea force.

The fighting consists of dudes with swords, guns, you name it. However one particular source of power comes from devil fruits, mysterious fruits which grant the user who eats them special powers. The only downside to them is that you become an anchor and lose the ability to swim and become weak when submerged in water. Luffy himself ate the Gomu Gomu no mi, which turned him into a rubber human.

I recommend this manga or anime if you're into early Dragon Ball style adventures. The big difference is that the world building is more deliberate so you'll see characters reappear much later and trigger certain events critical to Luffy's fate. The characters naturally are not isolated from the rest of the world and its politics unlike DB. The fights also become more varied through the use of all the different powers and weapons at the fighter's disposal.
