Shun Nakamura on Sonic Mania's Reception
Shun Nakamura: It was very interesting for me to see Sonic Mania come out, get very high scores and have people praise the game. From the team's perspective, we're still going to be making 3D games for the audience that likes that style of Sonic - when we see the reactions that Mania got, the entire team sat down and thought it was really interesting, and we should break down what people liked about Mania, and in the future - when we build our 3D games - see what essence we can take from Sonic Mania and put into a 3D world, to give people what they're looking for and that they've found in Sonic Mania.

I'd like to believe that the next 3D sonic will look at what we like about Mania but I'll hold my breath. I had high hopes for Forces before they showed more of it. Now I just hope the Mania team continues.
Sounds a lot more promising than the other Forces developers comments, which were basically “idk what people like about Sonic Mania and here’s a bunch of things people liked about sonic we changed for no reason”.
I would like to see a 3D Sonic game that's based on the classic Mega Drive games both in the gameplay as well as the presentation. As far as I remember, Sonic Adventure tried to translated some of the 2D level design philosophies into 3D, but none of the sequels tried to follow on that with Forces especially looking like it's on autopilot 3/4th of the time.
I think one way to make a 3D sonic work a bit better is to design the levels like they are a bowling alley with bumpers. The level design in 2D is hard enough, but taking away another dimension means you don't have to worry about someone falling off the sides of the level.
Sort of like City Escape in Sonic Adventure 2. I'd say that's really a perfectly designed 3D Sonic level that feels like 2D Sonic, but in 3D, because the level doesn't quickly fling you off a cliff with crazy turns. The platforming is more contained and fun because it boxes you in.

They certainly don't seem to be taking any of the strengths judging from forces. Like come on give us great level design, actual exploration, good physics, a simple plot and simple gameplay with no fluff. No need for 3 gimmicks, the wisps, and those pathetic boost pads that take away from physics-based platforming.
They did try a little for adventure 1 but they botched it by cramming in useless characters that dilute the sonic gameplay, as well as the lack of polish.
That said, I honestly don't mind boost when the level design is good. Give me more sky sanctuary and unleashed and not the straight lines we see in forces. Having the level designer for colours really hurts the game

Sonic Adventure 2 actually did a pretty decent job of Sonic in 3D
Make a game with level design similar to that.

Problem was for when the level design drops off the cliff and degrades in to space rail grinding and falling off cliffs

Yeah for the first three Sonic stages lmfao. Everything else crumbles in comparison. Adventure 1 managed to be consistent in level design for the Sonic stages much longer than 2 ever could
