In a Q&A by GameInformer with Rockstar director of design Imran Sarwar, they revealed why GTA V didn't get any singleplayer expansions:

"With GTA 5, the single-player game was absolutely massive and very, very complete. It was three games in one. The next-gen versions took a year of everyone's time to get right, then the online component had a lot of potential, but to come close to realising that potential also sucked up a lot of resources. And then there are other games - in particular Red Dead Redemption 2. The combination of these three factors means for this game, we did not feel single-player expansions were either possible or necessary, but we may well do them for future projects."Also revealed in the Q&A is the fact that Rockstar may change the rollout of updates to GTA Online in order to get players to try RDR2.

Hopefully my pessimistic nature for once is misplaced though and we get a Undead Nightmare level of quality expansion for RDR2.
GTAO blew up well beyond their expectations and so all of their resources we're fed into that moneymaker.
I thought it was because those shark cards made them so much money that expansions to the sp weren't necessary.
I see what they are saying. It's ok. As long as RDR2 becomes the greatest game ever, I'll take not having SP updates on GTA5 :)
It's no coincidence that as GTA:Online got bigger and bigger the price of everything they were adding to it got higher and higher. Can't really blame them for focusing on Online. When I finished single player I was done with that aspect of it. I wouldn't have bought DLC. I've played GTA:O a ton since launch but never bought a Shark Card. Bungie could learn a thing or two about adding end-game content from Rockstar.
Why beat around the bush? That PR is fooling nobody. "We were planning on more single player content until we discovered that GTAO would make 20x the revenue."
By munchie64 Go To PostNo Undead Nightmare 2 I suppose :(My hope is that it's in there from the start. And let's not forget, Undead Nightmare had an online component.
RDR2 is gonna be FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKED. Whatever online functionality that game will have will be lootboxes and trash microtransactions.

Yep and pretty much every other DLC they put out was GTA Online style updates.
"we did not feel single-player expansions were either possible or necessary"
I think this is vague enough to suit all audiences. They want that to mean from a content perspective, we know it means from a business one.

PR gonna PR, but was anybody even still expecting single player expansions? Game released like 4 years ago.
C'mon R* ya'll teased it so many times before. At this point I'm ready to move on from Los Santos anyway.
I'm sure there was very little incentive to make SP based DLC's when you can make GTA:Online content and that would get people to buy shark cards and such.
Maybe I'm wrong, I didn't even bother with the online portion after a few hours.

By Pele.gif Go To PostRDR2 wont have cars. I can't see their online being as popular as GTAV Online was/is.They will sell loads of horse customization DLC. You will be able to give your horse a rainbow mane and have it leave a magma trail when it runs.
By Pele.gif Go To PostRDR2 wont have cars. I can't see their online being as popular as GTAV Online was/is.They'll find a way m8. I'm in for the single player just like GTA V, but that's it.
RDR 1's MP was actually kind of fun tho. For like 2 weeks.
By Pele.gif Go To PostRDR2 wont have cars. I can't see their online being as popular as GTAV Online was/is.'You'll be able to use Coyote cards to buy in game cash to mod your horse. Get your horse lowered and put some wicked neon lights underneath it to really make it yours.'

By Pele.gif Go To PostHorses are not cars m8sThat is correct. Pele with the factz
GTAV was so complete that they talked about singleplayer DLC and it was coming. Just admit GTA:O was more profitable everyone knows games are made to make money
By NinjaFridge Go To PostThat is correct. Pele with the factzSomeone has to innit
Yeah it was complete and a huge game, and online took off really well.
But that doesn't make it sting less :(
And every (early) experience I have of GTA: Online is one of endless loading screens and strangely empty lobbies.

As others have stated, the online component defied all earning expectations. There's a heap of money coming in through that, and the ROI on singleplayer just can't compete with the payout on adding new online modes.
The one thing I don't seen mentioned is just how much cinematic, storylike content has been added to the later expansions. I've been enjoying seeing the rogues' gallery, even if Michael, Trevor, and Franklin aren't involved.
