|OT| The Deuce (you say) - Simon and Pellcanos take on 70s Times Square
- Page 1 of 1
This is a thread to discuss The Deuce, a premium HBO drama by the creators of The Wire, chronicling the rise of the porn industry in NYC in the early 70s.
Like The Wire, there's a huge cast, and the show is about the interplay of various parts of the system. Prostitutes, pimps, the mob, cops, and everybody else trying to scratch a living out of the Deuce is on display.
======
A show this good deserves a thread.
People watching? What do you like?
Personally I've always liked the "good" cops on The Wire and Alston is great in this.
James Franco seems a little bit limited in range, but damn if he didn't just direct a great episode.

This show is awesome, so many complex characters and situations. Rooting hard for Candy to find success in directing, Maggie Gyllenhaal better win some awards for her performance. Show does an amazing job of connecting with the pulse of how the streets were at the time, without the glamour of hollywood the characters look like they have their flaws in personality and physical appearance.
Only character i'm not a fan of is Abby, the pimps are despicable but I understand them. She just annoys me and comes off as holier than thou to literally everyone she comes across.

By Ignatz Mouse Go To PostI'm assuming her attempts to be a savior are going to hit an ugly wall eventually.Especially with all the parties around her and Vincent becoming more desperate like the pimps. She seems to be one of those smart characters who does stupid things.
Chris Coy better not die of AIDS. Just kill off disposable boyfriend of the week. Though I guess this is more a Season 2/3 concern.

Yeah, I hope not. But this is also going to have to be a big part of the show, if the reports that it's going to cover the 80s are true.
By Jocund Go To PostI hope nothing bad happens to Slim Charles :(
I keep wondering what happens to him. Does he claim self-defense, or is he just straight-up going to get locked up?
Also, I updated the OP to be a little more official looking. When I'm not working I can throw some pictures up there to make it look nice, too.

Yea, given the stated plans for the show it's unavoidable. Maybe they'll be introducing more serious gay characters later, but right now Paul is the only one. That leaves an awkward situation where the only gay guy is doomed to a terrible fate or it's just barely covered through peripheral characters (or just through straight hookers/porn people), and that doesn't seem like a direction Simon would go.
I just have this uneasy sense of mortal peril about the character stemming from the proposed structuring of the show. And we haven't even gotten his (real) dick yet! C'mon HBO. One job, etc.
