I was wondering if I should start on the hardest difficulty as a first playthrough? I normally don't do NG+ runs...so don't think I could do the game again.
You can always change the difficulty in the options if it's not your thing. Personally I went with Normal.

I haven't completed the game, but I think I started on second to toughest difficulty. That provided enough challenge until you get the hang of things. And I think you can change the difficulty at any time.
It you understand the mechanics for motion brewing and such from playing the other games then toy can probably start higher than normal.
Also stick with the game until after you get out of the first town (White Orchard?). I tried multiple times to get into the game and couldn't until it actually opened up.
I played on normal and I found it to be pretty easy once I got used to the shitty combat, as the first post said, you can always change the difficulty in game to find the one you’re comfortable with.
I started on Death March, the beginning is the roughest part of the game. When you start getting oil recipe, some skill points it gets manageable semi early and ridiculously easy later. You will die though that's for sure and previous Witcher gameplay helps, it's all about being prepared for what you're gonna face. If you pay attention you'll always know ahead.

I play on the easiest because i hate the gameplay lol but fucking love everything else so wanted to enjoy it without it being a chore
It really depends if you are really good with potions etc. Learn that stuff quick and you should be good to go. :-)
Unless you're really committed to using alchemy and micromanaging, I'd say just play on normal. Game is good for its story anyway.
When I first played, I believe it was on normal. I don't think I messed with alchemy too much and I abused Aard sign. But as it has been pointed out already, you can always change the difficulty midway if you want.

What’s your experience with the previous games? If you know about the oils and decoctions start on Blood and Broken Bones. Change it to Death March later.

As far as i'm aware the only achievements/trophies that are effected from switching the difficulty is the ones which state completing the game on Death March and so on. Any ones to do with beating a certain enemy are not effected.

Nope. But I found the game doesn't actually get harder once you level up a few levels and with the right ability points.
I think it depends on how willing you are to do prep before battle. Oils, potions, etc. are pretty necessary on the highest difficulties and make a huge difference when fight enemies with different resistances. However if you want a more straightforward "let me just slash shit with my sword" kind of experience you're good with normal. Pretty sure you can change difficulty on the fly so unless you want the trophies / achievements there's no harm in experimenting.

I played it on Death March and it got easier as I went along. You will get the crap knocked out of you at the beginning though and it might sour you on the game if you're easily frustrated.

I think this depends on the build and your experience with the game, Death March is a cake walk with Alchemy-based builds but i'd make the argument that if you're not slugging drinks like an Alcoholic it can be quite difficult. Although my experience is based on NG+, i have no idea what a standard DM playthrough is like.
I played on the easiest difficulty and absolutely loved the game. I just made a whirlwind of death build......the game was still the greatest game i ever played even on the lowest difficulty.

I thought I could "cheat" and get the high difficulty achievement just like that. 😅

Should this be on or off? I mean I really like fluid combat and my limited playtime has shown me that the combat may not be that interesting. So I really don't know what to choose here.

I wouldn't recommend it for a first playthrough. But I must say, I rather enjoyed DM as it really necessitates a deep understanding of the systems.

My advice, start on the lowest or the second lowest, enjoy the story and atmosphere, the combat is really weak and it can make you rage rather fast on hard difficulties.
The difficulties only really change enemy HPs and damages. If you're good at dodging and timing your attacks, you could probably breeze through most of the game at higher difficulties. This is coming from someone who played through the first two games before though.

Starting on Death March isn't probably a good idea. The combat isn't that great and there is like no feedback. Even when I get hit I can't even tell. I also don't want to roll/dodge indefinitely.
I feel like combat gets better once you understand all it's systems and have skill points to actually take advantage of it, i actually really enjoy it but Death March assumes you already know this. I would switch to Normal until you are comfortable and move up accordingly.

Completely agree with this, i have played the game 5 times over and my first two playthroughs were on normal and after i played on Death March i couldn't go back. It's the quintessential experience and wouldn't ever go back now i know what i know, but as a new player it might not be for the best.
Okay. How do you deal with healing outside of combat? I am eating stuff but...it doesn't regen much XD

Yeah. I feelt like an actual witcher on death march, reading up on a creatures weakness, preparing oils and whatnot. I'm replaying on normal now and it's basically a hack and slash playthrough.

Meditate is an option ( not on Death March though), although i advise not eating stuff it does next to nothing. Pretty early on you will be able to craft a swallow potion. Do it as soon as you possibly can, it's much more effective than eating food.

Also what are things I should always buy at a shop?

As to buying from stores, you can find just about all components by searching and dismantling things over time. Some Gwent cards and recipes are some of the few things that end up making sense to buy. Though nothing early on.

Yes to both forest and growing back, although if you can't be bothered most things you will need early on will be found at the nearby herbalist.

I actually wish there was a difficulty above Death March. With a decoction and high toxicity build, the game is pretty easy :(

It really depends on your playstyle. I always went for gourmet for easy healing in the beginning + light attacks + quen-related skills. I think gourmet + a strong quen and fast combat are a must for a Death March playthrough.
I regret starting on normal to be honest. I found normal to be too easy by the end. I completed the game on hard but you dont get the trophy so I started a NG+ game on hard and never got around to completing the game and all it's expansions a second time.

Early on the best stuff do go for are probably quen related skills and fast attacks for a new player, An Alchemy high toxity build is great once you actually have the potions/decoctions to make it work but early on it's a bit of a waste.
Did any of you guys used reskilling later! Feels like I need to do it to focus more on a heavy-armor-and-attack-playstyle. And also get rid of the many mutagens... 😱
