Dumb: Disney is leaving Netflix to start its own streaming service, including ESPN's own service
- Page 1 of 1
Yay, more splintered services that each cost $15/mo. Eventually we'll all want cable back:
Disney wants to own a bigger piece of the streaming pie.
The company announced during its latest earnings report on Tuesday it intends to pull all its movies from Netflix.
Instead, Disney plans to launch a branded direct-to-consumer streaming service in 2019 starting in the U.S. and expanding globally.
CEO Bob Iger told CNBC's Julia Boorstin Disney had a "good relationship" with Netflix, but decided to exercise an option to move its content off the platform. Movies to be removed include Marvel as well as Disney titles. It will also be making a "significant investment" in exclusive movies and television series for the new platform.
The company will also launch its own ESPN video streaming service in early 2018. The platform, which will feature about 10,000 sporting events each year, will have content from the MLB, NHL, MLS, collegiate sports and tennis' Grand Slam events.https://www.cnbc.com/2017/08/08/disney-will-pull-its-movies-from-netflix-and-start-its-own-streaming-services.html
ESPN and Disney together may be worth $15 to a bunch of families though. Packaging ESPN with Disney should help ESPN make that move too. The problem with al carte is that the smaller channels don't have the subsidies form the larger channels to stay afloat. So the continued splintering will probably just lead to less content in general. The oxygens and DIY's are going to suffer unless they get brought in on these splintering umbrellas.
Yea, but what's next? Pulling ABC from Hulu/Sling whatever and charging $10/mo for that? CBS is already going that route. Might as well invest in a nice $100 antenna and get better quality video as our infrastructure is being slowly decimated and once Net Neutrality is gutted under this administration.

By rodeoclown Go To PostESPN doesn't have the NHL contract, so uh, how are they offering that in their streaming deal? And the MLB has their own streaming service, so ugh, yea. Notice how the NBA is missing, too? I bet the only shit you see on ESPN's streaming service are "exclusive" highlights and not really live sports. They don't mention live events, just content.

That's exactly what we'll do.
Buy an antenna for network HDTV. (one time fee but I don't pay for the cable box)
Buy ESPN Disney (15$ a month)
Buy HBO ($15 a month)
Buy Showtime ($15 a month)
Buy Netflix ($15 a month)
Buy NBA Network ($20 a month)
Buy MLB Network ($20 a month)
Buy NFL Network ($20 a month)
Buy random things like discovery / TNT / TBS / FX / Comedy for another $20-$30 a month
That's $140--$150 a month for basically what I watch right now. That's slightly more but pretty much in line with what I pay right now for cable and internet together. (about $180 with internet a month). Piecemealing items may even be cheaper if you don't watch a bunch of sports. In this scenario I would likely forgo the NFL network because It's my least watched sport by a large margin.
We'll have more trade offs to choose between and we'll have fewer content to choose from.
EDIT: Forgot Amazon Prime TV, but that's sort of inaccurate because I also get shipping and music on top of the video
I'm so glad I hate NFL and MLB lol.
And the hell is Netflix $15/mo for? Do you rent discs? And ESPN and Disney are gonna be $15/mo EACH most likely, not a package deal.

I actually use my sister's account. When I did use netflix years ago it did include their disc service because I prefer to watch new released on blue ray.
If Disney and ESPN aren't packaging that together they're really trying to milk their shit and it will give me an excuse to drop ESPN entirely.

Hmm not liking the way this is all going
Every channel and network will have their own streaming service it seems

Can't wait for them to remove their content from all Netflix reigons and have their own service available in the US only.

It will lead to channels/networks cannibalizing off of other channels. There will be buyouts of content etc etc. For instance, Time Warner owns CNN, HLN, TBS, TNT, Turner Classic Movies, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Boomerang and TruTV. You'll end up with about 10-15 content networks to choose from and less content on those networks. Depending on the cost Scripps Networks Interactive (owns HGTV and DIY and Food Network) , might not get enough membership to sustain all of their channels. So they'll either cut their programmiong or sell content off to people who can subsidize those into their packages. Fuck ... scripps might be bought off entirely.
Here's a good resource for you to see which channels cost the most and least in your average cable bundle.

Just give me a Turner Classic Movies app already.
With cable details their app is already incredible value but it needs to be available on more devices and not tied down to a cable sub.

I don't want a million streaming services. I don't even really want the cable I have now, but until blackout rules go away on sports and I can just subscribe to MLB.tv and NBA League Pass and watch literally every game, I'm stuck with it.
By Switchpro Go To Postcool another service that won't be available here.Which is good and means Disney will continue to deliever their stuff to the European Netflix branches.
Yeah. Considering that Netflix will just license childrens content from other places?
I'm not paying a subscription just for ESPN when i can go driect to the league.
I'm not paying a subscription just for disney when i can easily get other content. (I mean, Pokemon alone entertains for months).
And i'm not paying for them together, when Netflix is already there and better.
Stupid waste of corporate money.
Now if Disney went to Netflix and talked to them about integrating an exclusive contract for Live Broadcasting for sports content?

Would you guys rather have Netflix of today or when it had more popular movies and tv shows?
I'd probably go with the neflix of today since i can always get everything else with distros even though the year or two when everything was on netflix was nice.

Also I predict next big move will be for one of the streaming providers to in big for exclusive rights to a big sports franchise.
My suspicion will be it will be the premier league initially, and considerably more than the 5.5 billion that was paid for the last round of rights.

As someone who has access to all NBA games through international league pass there's not a fucking thing I'd miss on ESPN that would require me getting a streaming subscription. Maybe I'd watch some college hoops but I certainly wouldn't miss it.

I would love someone to have the global rights to the PL and make it available worldwide.
mlb.tv was the greatest thing ever back when it launched Allowed me to watch unlimited games live and on replay for 120 dollars in London. I went from having two games available a week, to every single game available.
What sucks is that the NBA would love to do a MLB.tv setup but the guaranteed money that TNT and ESPN throw at them is just too large to go their own route. Maybe in a decade there'll be leverage where everyone would just rather pay for NBA games.
Actually I just realised I'd probably subscribe for a month to watch some 30 for 30s I missed, but that would be it.
We get that overseas with League Pass. It's (mostly) really good, and the Kodi add in is great. If you wanted to VPN it you could watch them.

HD is easy. I know at least one place close to realtime (you need an invite), but the cost of not being able to live-tweet with your bros is that you're not paying for all that ****.
