BBC announces the wonderful Jodie Whittaker as the 13th, and first female Doctor

The new Doctor's identity was revealed in a trailer broadcast at the end of the Wimbledon men's singles final.http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-40624288
The Broadchurch star succeeds Peter Capaldi, who took over the role in 2013 and leaves in the forthcoming Christmas special.
Whittaker, 35, said it was "overwhelming, as a feminist" to become the next Doctor.
She will make her debut on the sci-fi show when the Doctor regenerates in the Christmas special.
The Huddersfield-born star, who was a late favourite to become the Doctor, will find a familiar face for her on set - Doctor Who's new showrunner is Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall.
Also amazing that Chibnall is taking over. If you haven't seen Broadchurch yet, you're missing out.
Chibnall's track record with DW episodes is... not good.
Haven't seen much of Whittaker's work; good in that Black Mirror ep, outshone (like everyone else was) by Boyega in Attack the Block. Just happy it wasn't Kris Marshall.

I haven't wanted to sleep with a Doctor since Tennant left so this is good news. I can finally start watching the series again
She's incredible in Broadchurch. Really give that a go and maybe it'll give you a bit more hope for Chibnall once he's got full reigns. I haven't really liked Capaldi as the Doctor.
Chibnall is a bad Who writer.
But he's supposedly implementing a writer's room for the first time. So maybe he'll be better as a showrunner. Moffat was legendary as a writer, and kinda bad as a showrunner.
Whittaker is a good pick.

I think he's been fantastic, but let down at script level a lot. He's so much more subtle than the last few have been, so much better at playing the quiet moments.
I like Capaldi as the Doctor, I just don't like the Capaldi Doctor Who run. I need to finish it (I think I'm on the last season or two?) but I don't know whether it feels recycled at this point, but the script and writing is definitely not interesting. It just lacks momentum and gravity for an actor of his capabilities.

If you haven't seen it yet, S9 is a big improvement on S8. His speech at the end of the Zygon Inversion and the entirety of Heaven Sent are genuinely incredible pieces of acting.
I'm halfway through the latest season and finding it fairly middling, but he's always watchable.
Capaldi > Smith > Eccleston > Tennant
Hah, I think the last episode I saw was The Woman Who Lived.
And whoaaa at your rankings. Uhm, Smith = Tennant > Capaldi > Ecclestone

My favourite ep is probably a Tennant one, Midnight or The Impossible Planet. Heaven Sent probably third; it's an extraordinarily good piece of TV
By n8 dogg Go To PostCapaldi > Smith > Eccleston > TennantThe Smith run had better writing but as Doctors, agreed so it's 2 vs 1 reilo. What chu gonna do?
I'm confused by some of the angry fans saying they will no longer watch the show. Surely if they have been watching recently they would have accepted that time lords can change gender when it happened to the Master? The canon had already been established.
