I know of very successful black people from the Caribbean that have done really well in capitalism so I don't get that. Might just be the social bubble I'm in.
Honestly any economic or political system especially one geared towards consolidating power into a few (or morphed into that) is going to have marginalized groups even further excluded unless people go out of their way to deal with the already embedded inequities. And some of these inequities aren't just the shitty foundations we start with but basic consideration for how people might want to live or biological/health care failing on behalf of acting like a certain kind of person is the default human being. Then folks also forget it's not like some of the stuff run "by and for the state" comes without discrimination against various ethnic groups, homosexuals and women because of who's running the show.
Far as the question asked with regards to capitalism specifically, it's hard to talk about these things in the abstract but I will mention here in the US that predatory loans, pay day advances, privatization of prisons, schools, all really serve to keep already marginalized poor folks in poverty. It's a hell of a hill to climb. People can do it, have done it, but something being possible for some doesn't make it fair over all.

I agree with him, American capitalism needs an underclass to function optimally and poor whites will always vote against black people, even if they hurt themselves. Schools are becoming more and more segregated in the US and schools in predominantly white areas are always more well funded than those in predominantly African American cities/towns. I personally lived that, from elementary school thru middle school I went to predominantly AA schools, but in HS my mom sent me to a school in a predominantly white town because we lived right on the border so I could go to their HS which was a "blue ribbon" school. The difference was huge, classrooms were much smaller because we had more teachers, we had up to date textbooks, all kind of afterschool programs etc. The HS I was supposed to go to had a graduation rate of 66%, and while I think I would have done fine (My father was a teacher there) it was the right move to send me somewhere else, but a lot of my friends from middle school aren't doing too hot.
All of that leads back to capitalism, better funded schools in more affluent areas will keep producing people who in turn can turn around and pay higher taxes to insure that the school district they send their kids to will be properly funded. A singular black person/family can do fine and thrive with capitalism, but as a whole black people in America aren't going to thrive in a system that is clearly designed with keeping the entire group where they are. The proof is in the pudding, you have states that have cut funding on education while increasing funding and spending more on incarceration while also over policing and disproportionately targeting black people.

My family is from the Caribbean mostly, they came to the US in the 20s and 30s but were well educated (Doctors/teachers) so it was easier for them to make their way up. A Caribbean doctor in the 30s-40s may as well have been a King.
Education being funded mostly from property taxes has to be one of the most clear cut classist pieces of garbage we continue to do. Then you get jerks still on the Charter School nonsense. Oh hi Corey Booker and other Dems.
The topic itself seems sort of huge and in need of definitions considering that simply advocating progressive taxes and regulations makes you a socialist in today's America. The right was trying to say that a 70% tax on upper wealth is tantamount to slavery for Christ's sake. All in all I think it's hard to argue Capitalism hasn't done a lot of good in the world. It's just an economic system though, and acknowledging that there could be improvements is looked at as heresy to the right. It's just like every economic system we've tried though. Power coalesces at the top. Poor and impoverished people don't have the same ladder to success and face more challenges as our society is still struggling with post slavery / civil rights issues that has helped keep minorities in this class. Then there's the whole "rising tide lifts all boats" arguments you hear from socialists and many people of color balk at that noise for good reason. All in all it seems like while our economic and social systems are intertwined, they're also not interlocked. So even if you did create the perfectly regulated capitalist system, or the perfect socialist system, black people and other minorities would still be dealing with fucked up shit in other area's of society that an economic system can't solve. Politics just complicates this further. Bunch of GOP twitter accounts praising King today, but fail to acknowledge King would have vehemently opposed political gerrymandering or other voter suppression tactics.
Economic systems in general don't work when we allow the select few to pick winners and losers. It's not like black or brown people are treated as equals in the most progressive of social democracies in Europe, either. Try being a Turkish immigrant in Germany or a Muslim in France. Do we blame that on socialism, too? It's way too myopic to just say that the economic system is at fault while ignoring the system issues at place perputated by our political elites.
It's all in the wording and the context.
We had a dept meeting this morning to run back over the numbers for the last year. As soon as they started I should've left because I saw right where this shit was going.
So they go around the room. Tell how much each of our segments is up then they leave out the chick that's #1 (I'm #2) and I see where it's going. So then my boss gets up and I'm thinking like damn I hope she stretched her Jaws cause we're about to see some major deep throat action here.
Proceeds to spend 20 mins waxing poetic about how amazing the chick that's #1 is, how hard she works (she does I'll give her credit but not as hard as the rest of us given she has the easiest division to work with), how we could never hope to be as good as her and we should just try to be half as good. Gives her some employee of the year thing that I'm pretty sure had an extra bonus in it. All kinds of shit and the longer it went on the more management started to expose themselves on how they actually feel about our team. The cringe was off the charts.
Now I do pretty damn well myself so I wasn't tweaked about it. I've worked with them long enough to know how they "praise" folks by shitting on everyone else whether it's based in fact or not. I know that no matter how well I do ill never get the same praise because I'm not outwardly demonstrative about my work like she is.*** But the numbers are the numbers. We both get good bonuses, can come and go as we please, all kinds of special privileges. But shes egregious with her shit though. Probably takes 3x vacation days as what we actually have. I just use it to come in a little late and leave a little early sometimes cause I just hate being in the office.
But man... I looked around that meeting and if looks could kill. And as far as who's liked/respected in the office we couldn't be further apart. She's (by her own self-admission) a thundercunt bitch to pretty much everyone except me and maybe one other person. But she'll still bitch people out for doing me favors that they wouldn't do for her because I treat everyone far better. We're pretty good friends though actually. We hang out a lot outside of work. It's always weirded people out at work because we're very different personality wise but I find her fucking hilarious to be around.
She knew folks were tight too because she came in my office later and said it was kind of embarassing, it made her uncomfortable and she wanted to leave for the day because she knew once word got around the office that folks would hate her more than they already do.
So all day I've had folks come by my office just biiiiiitching about her and what happened in the meeting. And everytime I walk by her office she looks sad as fuck. And I'm thinking to myself "this accomplished the exact opposite of what management hoped it would"
***My boss called a meeting yesterday with me and one of our biggest clients to basically be like "hey it doesn't seem like domino does a great job on your account, do we need to get you a new rep or should we just discuss how we can do better." and my client was like o_O and basically called everyone in his department in so they could explain the numerous reasons of why they enjoy working with me more than any other vendors they have and how I do a better job than they could ask for. This is after she actually gave the client away to a new rep back in the summer without asking me (I told my boss she'd regret doing that and she did. We have a weird hot/cold relationship) and the new rep begged me to take them back because I set the bar too high and she couldn't match the service. 😂
And then of course my boss will be appalled whenever I get a new job. She damn near had a panic attack the last time I was looking because she realized what it would mean if I left.

How sway
The amount of planning involved in pulling that off. Respect.

After fighting with the IRS for nine months last year, I'm shocked to find out I'm getting my refund this week already. We did it.

By blackace Go To Postshit I got to still file American taxes from Japan
What is the actual law on this or does it vary state to state? Is it if you have assets or something your income is taxable in both the country your in and the states?
I don't even bother trying to target Americans for international opportunities specifically because of this.

Something like the first X dollars of income is exempt from US federal taxes, and then after that you're fucked.
I think that's the actual text on the form.

If you have assets and shit Japan tries to tax those as well unless you keep your money in your home country.

Means unable to get preggers so no chance of pregnancy. Although people tend to forget stis/stds aren't fun either.

You have kids or not planning on any?
By SUPER YARAK Go To PostYou have kids or not planning on any?
I have a kid with someone else. She never wanted to have kids because she wants to adopt so she got them tied.
That's pretty sound of her, not enough people are willing to adopt kids. I know a lady who fosters really young children temporarily until a family is found for them, and it breaks her heart every time she has to let them go. One kid she had was barely a few years old and had behavioural issues that complicated adoption, so in the end she adopted him herself. Proper legend.
My wife and I want kids, but we literally can't. We both have problems that makes it close to impossible.
My parents, blessed them are trying to get me to adopt. It's not that I don't want to (my wife and I are fine with it) but I just want to get my financial issues sorted out first. It's frustrating as hell because I know they want the best for me but...

Started my day having to go damn near bust a coworkers door down to make sure she hadn't killed herself. I hope you guys had a better day. I'll post more about it later when I can process it all.
By SUPER YARAK Go To PostHope it turned out alright, domino.
the best thing i can say is that she's alive. but she absolutely is not fine and this is probably the tip of the iceberg.
im very afraid that yesterday was the first cry for help. i have a feeling she's mixing pills and liquor because she reeked of alcohol and she had all her pills out on the living room table when we got there.
she came back to work today and made a big show of acting like everything was normal. there's only maybe 4 or 5 of us that know what happened. it was very obvious that she hadnt eaten much if at all in the 36 or so hrs since we went to check on her. she had noticeable shakes and she could barely hold any sort of focus on one thing for more than 5 seconds.
she's flat out defiant to the idea of taking some time off, going to see a therapist or even just taking her emails off of her phone. i'll have emails from her at like 4am about suuuuuper trivial shit when we have to be to work at 8:30. but she's constantly freaking out about the idea of work piling up if she doesnt check it. so i know she's not sleeping well. we gave her lots of ideas of things she could do to go out and meet people (one of her big things is she feels like no one cares about her) and get out of that routine of work > home > sleep > repeat that she has.
idk if she's just hit a wall temporarily but i've known her for 5 years and i've never seen her so low (i knew she was on antidepressants for a while now) no matter how unhappy she was w/ her life situation
it really made me rethink all of the shit we've seen her do that we just considered kooky/quirky. this has been coming for a while.
