Look, the article doesn't actually say affluent hispanic/black/asian students can't take advantage of this system either, so the implication of FF's post is essentially, "rich black/hispanic kids are afforded the same privilege, what's the big deal?"
But selecting for a system that favors privilege necessarily favors the privileged class, in this case, white people.
And also, how many rich black parents are sending their kids to do equestrian? sailing? polo? give me a goddamn break

I don't like this system because rich kids can send their applications early and places are seemingly given on the first come-first serve basis.
My point against the article and some people's reading of it, is that it is saying this system is wrong because it indirectly benefits white people because white people are more likely to affluent than hispanic/black students. I would still be against this system if there wasn't a wealth disparity among races.
Would you be?

Seems like you're reading too much into the argument? The article is not saying a system rewarding white people in general is bad (although that argument can and should be made as well, in a different context than school admissions), the article is saying a system that rewards privileged white people is bad. Notice the difference.
But I admit, affluence may not be the right word here since what this policy enshrines is privilege. While minorities are generally less well off than whites in this country, even fewer have access to the social capital required to be the athletes described here. Even nominally rich black and hispanic families may not have the same access to hockey rinks and skiing lessons and equestrian instructors that a similarly well off white family in a white suburb has.
So the alternative you presented is a world where we've already corrected for all institutional biases that cause such disparities in social capital to begin with, which has no basis in the reality we deal with
isn't the entire ivy league about rewarding the privileged? get in if your parents went there or donated money etc..

Sent the wire this morning. Should fund and record today. Should get keys tomorrow. I'm officially a broke home owner again.
Now .... another remodel. Ripping the entire kitchen out. Adding new lights since it's a 70's home with all switched outlets for lamps (so fucking cheap for a builder). Re texture wall. Add AC. New floors. Redo guest bath. I'm doing everything but the AC and the wall texture.

I hate looking at homes. Spent a lot of time doing it last night.
because all i can think of are the extra costs needed to get them up to spec, or how dumb the layouts are.

Home ownership is one of those privileged af deals but holy hell stressful. Some shit goes wrong or needs improvement asap and there goes thousands of dollars.

My wife’s promotion got “postponed”. She’s not happy but we couldn’t look for new employment knowing we could enter escrow at any time. She’s looking now, but this shit is tight budget wise. Luckily I have some equity from the sale to do improvements. Ohh yeah I have aluminum wiring so I also need to pig tail all my outlet s

She needed to leave anyway. They’ll counter. She’ll say no.

Depending on where you are the older homes have better bones and quality of materials. Not to mention built ins. This versus shit just slapped together as fast as possible to make a quick buck.
By blackace Go To PostI bought new… Not going to pay same price for an old house after renovations as a new houseHere, where we want to buy, new homes are rare or are on old blocks that have been split. So buying older gets you a block 2x the size. (That, you can split later your self).

It's a good idea when viable. Problem around my county is all the houses they're building are small as fuck, even if they're 3 bedrooms.

Maybe a blessing in disguise about the promotion. Doesn't sound like the best of places to go back on something like that.

It’s not. They gave her HR director of the year to placate her as they pulled her promotion until next years budget
Finally all the paperwork is done and I was supposed to start working on Friday because November 1st is a national holiday here.
I say supposed to because they just called me to say that they need me to work on the holiday.
Still have no idea what I am going to do on the job but apparently they need me to do emergency backups of VMs.

It's really eye opening, especially as you're older, when you find something that you genuinely like and want to do more of. I feel like when you're younger you're just kind of down for everything due to limited funds. But I'm 29 and I've gotten into so many slump of just watching shows 'because I paid for it' or playing games because it kills time. The whole concept of a backlog has ruined my ability to enjoy most things because I force myself to do things I don't want to. Not that I actively hate but that I'm getting nothing out of. Like a LOT of video games now are designed this way especially with time wasting built into it.
Working out was one thing I got into and I really like and want to do more of. And it's such a different feeling than launching Warcraft or Team Fortress or even my precious Truck Simulator and just playing it to try to 'take my mind off things.' I got into a video series on youtube of old amusement parks and marathoned the whole thing in a couple days. I can't remember the last time I did that.
My goal now is to try to find more things and see which I find fun. Not to keep doing the same things until it becomes 'fun.' Not to feel so attached to some sort of purchase or commitment.

Does anyone here manage people in their job? Currently managing a team of 10 and its the most mentally/emotionally exhausting thing I've ever done.

By Kidjr Go To PostDoes anyone here manage people in their job? Currently managing a team of 10 and its the most mentally/emotionally exhausting thing I've ever done.i manage 3 people directly but there's a group of 3 of us that kind of oversees all the junior staff (10-12 ppl depending on the time of year).
i kind of had the opposite experience of DY. i cared too little in the beginning on some "yall can sink or swim on your own because that's how i did it"
the group i manage now i feel like i have a good balance of caring but also letting them succeed/fail on their own.
the most frustrating thing i run into is still the whole "i figured this shit out why cant yall" and even my boss has had to remind me not everyone just gets shit off the bat or will at least try to figure it out on their own like i did.
By Kidjr Go To PostDoes anyone here manage people in their job? The biggest issue is that one of the team members lives in Vietnam

So i have a friend who lives a couple states away that I've been pretty close friends to for like 20 years, i'm also friends with his wife. Talk to him about once a week over gchat with mostly dumb stuff, movies or games or whatever. Last night i heard from another friend that oh his wife is pregnant and about to give birth any day now. Neither of them ever even mentioned it... is it just be or is that sketchy/weird has hell? Feel pretty angry and a "well that lets me know where i stand" feeling, but just wanted to vet it.
Gonna sound weird but is mutual friend like in their life physically? Some times people don't mention a pregnancy a bunch as to not jinx it. If the mutual friend sees her, she can't exactly hide it.
